We'll be in the area in October but will sadly only have a day or less to "see" the Great Barrier Reef, and we'll probably have to go on a touristy boat trip rather than snorkeling or something more exciting. Given these limitations, who would operate the best glass-bottom boat tour, and what would be the best place to depart from?

My family and i did a day trip with 'Quicksilver' to the outer barrier reef and it was one of the highlights of our trip. The company send a coach that will pick up from Cairns, Palm Cove (where we were staying) and Port Douglas. Port Douglas is where the giant catamaran took off from. It took 90 on the boat to get to the outer reef. We were taken to this massive Steel pontoon of which had everything you could want. there was a walkway that you could walk through to see underwater at see the fish etc and watch them being fed.I deal for both swimmers and non swimmers. You could go diving and snorkeling. There was the glass bottom boat (semi submersable) that took you out for about 20 mins to see the reefs and fish. You sit on this stool and underneath your feet is glass and glass windows. The views are amazing. My sons loved it. We had a beautiful buffet lunch on board the pontoon. It was a full days trip but very enjoyable. Costed about 90 pound each per adult and cheaper for children. Great photo opportunities too!!!!
I'd go!!!!!

Check out a company called Quicksilver or something like that. They don't have glass bottom boat but a submersible you sit in and it drives around. Here's the website:
