Start off with as many as you can comfortably do, then increase the amount over a period of time...but be aware that this alone will not do the trick, proper constructed exercise and diet are also needed.

Doing an exercise like 'The Plank' or any other abdominal vacuum type exercise will do more to 'flatten' the stomach than crunches alone.

Apparently Arnold Schwarzeneggar(*sp) used to do about 10 mins non-stop crunches on a roman chair as a warm-up before his main abdominal routines. He never counted these as reps, just time.
Also Cardio is a BIG part of getting lean abs section.
Good Luck

As Daniel said in a similar quiestion:

Ok, so this is the thing... the body just doesn't work that way. Let's get this straight once and for all: when the body burns fat it takes it molecule by molecule, gram by gram, from the whole body, not just from the area you're exercising. What's more, by performing such small, isolated exercises like 100 situps sit ups a day you're not burning many calories or much body fat anyway!

The answer is to get off your backside and carry out more of your exercises from a standing position and using many more of your muscles each time you train. That way, without even directly targeting the abdominals you'll be burning many, many more calories and conditioning your core at the same time. You're far more likely to see your flat stomach this way.

To get lean you need to work harder for a shorter duration. Short circuits, intervals, relays that get you breathing hard, then rest. Five minutes at a time is all you need if you train this way.

Better still, skip those boring machines in the gym and use strength exercises with bodyweight or free-weights to send your metabolism into warp drive.

Incorporate exercises and movements that challenge as many muscales as possible at once. Exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, squats, lunges, jumps, forward bends, deadlifts. Y'know, those 'old-fashioned' exercises that people used to use before gyms got hi-tech.

You've got to cut the rubbish foods out of your diet altogether. You see, your body fat is used as a 'toxic dump', a waste-ground when your system is overburdened by foods it can't handle. When too many toxic foods find their way into your body, regardless of the calories you eat, your body will dump these toxins into wherever you hold your fat. Your waist among other places.

So if you truly want to get lean, you've got to get clean! That means removing many of the foods that your body considers toxic like:
Alcohol
Caffeine
Processed foods
Sugar (or substitute)
Anything with a number or unpronounceable word in it and most wheat products

Replace these foods with wholesome, nourishing foods that offer support to your body and you'll almost immediately see fat beginning to strip off. Foods like:
Fresh meat
Fish and poultry (especially organic)
Fresh fruit and veg (organic where possible)
Nuts and seeds, olives
Fresh, filtered water

To get a flat stomach you need to lose body fat. period.

Doing hundred of crunches will eventually give you big abs, but if they're covered in fat, no one can see them.

You shouldn't do dozens of abs exercises anyway. the abs are made out of the same stuff as all the other muscles in your body and grow the same way. You wouldn't do 100 bicep curls at a time to get big arms would you?

If you only train your abs, you end up with a weak back, because all the strenghth is at the front - leaving you prone to poor posture and injury.

Depends how much fat you have on your abdominal region.
Make sure you do your crunches effectively- start off with a small number then a short break- so that your crunches are all correclty performed.
Increase the reps every few days.

None!
Ok so to get a six pack you need to do crunches but you need a low body fat percentage to be able to see your abdominal muscles. To acheive this you need to do lots of cardiovascular work - running, cycling, swimming etc. and eat a healthy diet.

depends on your diet and body fat percentage mostley

you cant just do sit ups and will happen magically and no one can give you a time frame to getting a flat stomach.
