It depends on the type of pain. Paracetamol is the safest if you don't overdose. It won't hurt your stomach like asprin and other painkillers. If the pain is really strong the next step is Paracetamol + codeine...(ex Panadeine or Panamax & Co.)
After that you start needing prescriptions. The next strep is Panadeine Forte which just has extra codeine. Then you get to Morphene etc. If the pain includes inflammation you should use Nurofen or similar. But the most important thing you should do if you suffer from constant pain is see your doctor as taking any pain killer for long periods of time can be dangerous. For instance panadol can damage your liver and nurofen can increase your chance of stroke or heart attack depending on your state of health. Good luck!

It really matters on what pain. Some narcotic not advisable in trauma related pain due to vasodialation affects. Fentanyl works well and contrary to above answers you can get it from other people than anesthesiologists. We carry Fentanyl on the ambulance for pain. For normal every day pain such as headaches and body aches try Motrin or Ibuprofen. Tylenol is OK but does damage to liver especially if you have been drinking. Oxycontin and other narcotics in tablet form are also effective for moderate to severe pain. One problem besides dependence issue is that prolonged use slows down digestive tract which leads to constipation and possible impatced stools. Pick you pain for that. Myself I would try out small and work up from there. It seems to me that the more medicine you take your body sometimes builds a so called tolerance, in which you need more to relieve pain.

Well I've been in quite alot of car accidents, and I've had severe bodily injury to myself including: Lacerated liver, collapsed lungs, and I had a hairline fracture in my neck. I don't normally take painkillers, but I've had quite a wide variety of different types of painkillers that were prescription like: Morphine, Demoral, Oxycodone, percasets, percadans, I was on pain medicine for about 8 months on 1 of my near fatal car crashes ( I wasn't the driver either time). I had lacerated my liver with the seat belt, and was in a 3 week induced coma. Any ways, my favorite feeling drug was demoral, it was really smooth feeling. Morphine was good too, but it felt too strong, like making you pass out kinda. And morphine made my veins feel like there was a slight stinging while injected. Demoral was the best in my opinion. It made you feel like laughing at anything. They were trying to shove a tube in through underneath my rib cage, because I had a swollen liver and they needed to drain any excessive liquid from the area. Any ways, they were giving me morphine, and I was still screaming from the pain of the tube. Then they gave me Demorol, and I was soooo happy. everything was just awsome!!

Heroine, but unfortunately it is not legal for the nonsensical reason it is addictive. So are many other commonly used drugs.

Fentanyl or even better sufenta. Only micrograms are sufficient but it is available only to anesthesiologists.
