Your local council will send one to you (whether it's automatic or if you have to apply) when you reach 60 years of age - which entitles you to FREE bus travel after 9am (in other parts of the country and not just where you live). National Express off the over 50's cheap coach fares - you only have to pay £10 (I think) for the whole year, great if you have friends or family in other parts of the country. I honestly don't know about the trains, as there are different operators all over the country.

Fare concessions for OAP's such as bus passes are administered by local councils to whom you should apply. You will find that the distance you are permitted to travel is limited. Some schemes are only very local, others may enable you to travel most of your county. The London scheme covers both bus and rail(tube) but I don't think any of the national rail companies are involved.

check with your local council, some give bus passes that provide discounted fares to surrounding counties. You should also be able to buy a pensioner rail card which lasts a year and gives you discounted fares.
