I find I want to get up and help them, for example wash the dishes after they have cooked and so on, this this a bad thing for me to do, I just like to be helpful, they keep saying it is their job.

I feel the same way and do the exact same thing. It is just the way I was raised....not to sit on my duff while someone else does all the work. I do find that some people insist that they do it as they were raised that the guest is not to work when they visit. So, over the years I have finally become comfortable with offering to help but graciously relaxing when the host insists that I do nothing since I am the guest. It sure took a while to get used to though!

You sound like a most excellent house guest!

Usually when I've eaten at someone's place we wash the dishes together or we leave them. I often help cut the veggies too if dinner isn't ready yet when I get there.
I think it'd be over the top if you went to wash them by yourself but just sitting around while they're doing it is silly too... I think the 'proper' thing is for the guest to sit and relax while the host does all the work but it's also boring, it's far more fun to do the work together!

Don't worry about it. Just offer and if they say no, then sit back, relax and enjoy your visit. It also depends how well you know them. You could always just get up and do it and don't take no for an answer. Depending on the person, they could be offended. Personally speaking, there are some friends I would let help me, whilst others I wouldn't. I would simply enjoy their company and leave the dishes, etc, until they have gone.

Although you are just being helpful and considerate towards them for having you over, your friend might feel a little put out.

To yourself you feel as though you are doing them a favour but to them it could seem like you are saying that they are not tidy enough or capable of keeping their home tidy.

Offer your help and if they are already washing/clean they would probably really appreciate your help if you explain that you just want to give them a hand.
However, it'll be for the best if you don't jump out of your seat straight after lunch to wash up or start cleaning while they go to the bathroom!
They'll feel much more relaxed and content around you if they feel that you aren't assessing their house and clealiness.

Its better to offer and show you mean well, they won't hold it against you if they did end up doing all of the work themselves, I stack the dishes and do the simple end stuff whilst they dig in in their kitchen, I don't want to give the impression that I am bossing them in their own space.

I always appreciate it when people offer but sometimes I am happier for them to sit back and relax while I clean up - so offer but if your help isn't required don't push the issue. PS if you stay over you should always make the bed in the morning

I have a pact with my frienfds. They do everything when I am visiting and I do everything in my house when they are visiting. I think that is fair. An offer is nice, but if the hostess refuses, then don't push it.

It is polite to offer assistance to your host but rude to push especially if they have popped to the loo or something! Always offer but be gracious if you receive a " no, sit down and relax"!!

When you are the guest, you aren't expected to do the dishes. If it's a relative's house, you are.

Only wonderful people with great hearts do things like this. You are perfectly right in efforts in helping them. That's how I do it
