Both. It always amazes me the sense of entitlement the criminal element feels. Somewhere along the way, this was programmed into the person. In the lower socio-economic areas, some people make choices to be there. They would rather smoke pot (or worse) than save for a decent house. Many are perfectly ok with staying on welfare or social security rather than obtaining skills to have a decent job. Somewhere along the way, this was programmed into the person.
Lack of discipline certainly plays a role here, if children have been constantly programmed that it is the schools fault, the coaches fault, the system's failure, there is no personal responsibility for poor performance. Then no motivation to correct the problem and instill discipline to create a better outcome.
The degradation of the family unit certainly didn't help the state of the US. Too many latch key children with extra hours unsupervised. Parents too tired to do the things stay at home moms could do to raise the children, and some of these tasks are passed on to daycares and teachers.
Point the fingers wherever you want.

It is primarily caused by a lack of self discipline. Neither discipline nor a person's social aspect play a large part in turning one to commit crime. Both can, however, play a roll but, it is a lack of self discipline that causes one to give in to social pressures or blame excessive or lack of discipline by parents for the way they are. We all can't control our environment or others around us but, we control how we interact to and with both.

The root of the crime in this country can be traced to the disintegration of the family unit. Many of those who are criminals come from single parent homes, where there is little to NO upbringing [discipline], or development of moral values and a sense of self respect and a respect for others.Their parents do as they please, and the kids do likewise. They get in with street gangs and start out very eary committing crime.

The worst crimes are caused by social aspects just like rebellion, robberies, kidnapping and drug addiction. Poverty and lack of morality are usually the roots of why people commit crimes.

It is caused by a liberal society that has said parents cannot punish a child. The child has no real direction and in the end, grows to expect more than it has earned. As an adult, is of the mindset that if I want it, I'll take it. I deserve it.
No standards, no backbone and no real parenting anymore.

Both, because there is Mala in Se (latin for because it is just
plain wrong) and Mala Prohibita (Latin for it is wrong because the Law says so)
Until there is some kind of Gene we can isolate and inject
into everyone born on this planet to make them do good. We
will always be faced with the facts the people will do wrong
either because it is wrong or prohibited by the Law

I think it's a lack of morals and of discipline in a person that they in turn blame on society, or blame on anything other than taking personal responsibilty.

SIMONE!! I thought you got mad and left. How do you find time to do this with " created large scale sculptures, sold 25 000 art pieces, done 2,5 million digital and photographic art pieces, 78 000 paintings, and abstract pieces in mixed media..... " You're AMAZING!! Or maybe that is your alter ego.
Anyway, to answer your question, I think the biggest crimes are the ones that aren't necessarily illegal. They're crimes that people commit against themselves like delusion, illusions of grandeur, being disconnected from reality. Not as much crime as it is a pity, really. Cause? Probably social aspects. Being bullied on the playground, unloving parents, jilted by boyfriend, you know, that sort of stuff.
