Actually, the first thing you need is to be a pilot in the branch of service that you join. People are "hired" as a fighter pilot. They go to training to become a pilot then fill out a "dream sheet", with their desires. For example...a person enters the air force and is sent to Reese AFB in Texas for a year long training as a pilot candidate. 3 months in a T-37 and 9 in a T-38. Depending on how well they do in each, plus their dream sheet, plus the air force needs determines where they are placed. F-16, F-15, A-10, etc or if they become T-38 instructor pilots.

College Degree, preferrably in Engineering, Mathmatics or Science, Excellent Eye sight, health etc. You have to first be commissioned as an officer of one of the services and then qualify for flight school. I have had serveral friends who were and or are active fighter pilots and the training is intense as hell from what they tell me and the wash out rate is high. If you are not already in or graduated from college your best bet is to Work your tail off to go to the US Naval Academy or Air Force academy, but a couple of my fighter jock friends went into the military from regular state universities and still made it. Good Luck to you and if you chose to serve, Thanks for helping keep this country safe, And on the plus side after 20 years at roughly age 42, you retire from the military with a 60K year pension then step into a job with the airlines making 150K (friend did that)

(1) Excellent eye health, not just 20/20 vision alone.
(2) Must be in tip top physical shape.
(3) Must have brains

These are the the main things you MUST have. If you are lacking in any one area, forget it.
