I'm Christian and belong to a very conservative religion where the women cover their hair to pray. I too don't understand why hijab is such an issue for Americans. My coworkers say it's because head covering is a sign of repression for women. I disagree. I believe head covering is a sign of empowerment! For most Americans though, it's out of ignorance and fear. Most don't understand islamic traditions. Ignorance always breeds fear of the unknown.
Countries that have gone so far as to ban wearing hijab are over stepping their boundaries and violating a persons right to choose their religion. Most people cheer when a ban is put on a muslim but forget to look on the flip side and realize that down the road a similar ban could be put on christians.

It would not bother me if they wanted to or not as long as they were given the choice to decide for themselves. I am not here to bash any ones religion and this is an opinion based on friends I used to work for. I do not know about the rest of the muslim world , but the people I knew she was not given the choice, she told me that she had to keep her hair covered, and that no other man except her husband could see her hair. I believe that this is a culture issue maybe and not so much religion based. I also asked her husband quite a few questions and he is the one who filled me in on what it is like in Lebanon. 1.The wives are not allowed to walk beside their husbands.2. They must keep their eyes down and not speak unless directed to . I even asked him why he treated the women who worked for him better than his wife and he just smiled and drank his coffee, while his wife was outside in 30 below weather shovelling snow. I did meet some other younger people of that nationality that were in Canada from a very young age that had more freedom . So like I said if it was a choice I have no problem with it . I believe that all people should be treated equally no matter what the race ,culture ,skin colour, religion and gender..

I have to say that you are a very inspiring young woman. You do have Freedom of Speech and Religion......That is the good thing about living in the Great United States....As far as people looking at you kinda strange it is because they do not see very many people in the US wearing a Hijab.....And a lot of people associate the wearing of the Hijab with terrorist because that is all you see on the news.....I am currently working in Baghdad and I see it everyday....The more you wear it the more people will grow accustom to you wearing it....Just remember that no one can EVER tell you to take it off......Hope that helps a little.....

this is what the bible says
1 Corinthians, chapter 11,5: but any woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled dishonors her head -- it is the same as if her head were shaven.
1 Corinthians, chapter 11,6: For if a woman will not veil herself, then she should cut off her hair; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her wear a veil.
1 Corinthians, chapter 11,10: That is why a woman ought to have a veil on her head, because of the angels
remember the verse where angels married the daughters of man?
Genesis, chapter 6,4: The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men that were of old, the men of renown

Essentially because it is stupid and un-necessary.
Any belief system that requires one to wear special clothing, funny hats, etc, is just 'taking the mickey' especially when all religions are fictitious.
Humankind wearing no clothes at all throughout their lives have no problem with sexual guilt or rape, as it is just normal.
Once you hide the human body, it becomes something that you crave.
Bashing islam is very easy and it should be done, as it is an evil system posing as something else. You are very fortunate to be able to choose to be a muslim and to live in a country where you have that choice and, I suspect, are free to drive a car, have a job, a bank account and an education. My best guess is that you also have not had to undergo involuntary female circumcision.
Don't be fooled. The true islamic countries suppress women's human rights, the q'ran encourages violence against non-muslims and anyone else who is an innocent bystander, with false promises of a fictitious heaven and the famous old 72 virgin story.
Mohammed was a sexually-obsessed deviant who lied his way into prominence.
As a self-confessed muslim, perhaps you don't really know what's going on in other parts of the world.
If you are interested, and you should be, try www.prophetmohammed.com.uk and see what your brothers and sisters are REALLY up to and what they REALLY think. You choose to be part of that? Bad choice.
god is imaginary and it is really about time that anyone with an iota of common-sense realised that. Most realise it at about the age of 12. I guess you are a little older than that so what's your excuse?

I'm a muslim.. Sister, and I'll tell you why it bothers, it bothers me as well:
1- Men try to impose this on women, though women are free-willed creatures that are equal to men according to Islam, I don't have to tell her what to wear.
2- We left Muslims for death in Sumal, Sudan, and other areas, there's a photo for a young black baby crawling while a hawk is waiting to eat him.. a real photo.. the photographer committed suicide after he shot this, and I got depressed for 5 months..
We left that Muslim baby to be a prey for an animal, while we fight for what women should wear!
3- Punishments related to un vieling or taking off Hijab in retarded countries like KSA.. God never said "Beat a woman for taking off her veil".. the Viel is not something you are to be forced to wear.. it's a virtue, a thing that you do to obey and please God, even if you choose Niqab "Like Habayeb's Avatar"; It's ok, It's your choice.. God says: "We have created Human in the best form" Bodily and mentally.. You use your mind; you deciede... I've no right to punish someone for not praying and punish her for hijab, prayers are the most important ritual in Islam.
4- We make demonstrations: "Kill The french president" for he banned Hijab at schools, while we remain silent watching Lebanon becoming a heap of ruins and Tsunami people begging food.
This is why the whole matter is frustrating.. if a woman wore the viel, it's ok, Godd bless you sis.. if she walked totally naked, I'll turn my face and preserve my eyesight as God Commanded me. I've no problem in that and I wont abandon the major problems of the Islamic world to discuss "what a woman must wear..."
The viel is not your way to heaven, neither is your deeds, it's God's will.. so I have no right to send people to heaven or hell judging a piece of cloth.. in My Country, viel has become a form of respect, while this is not true.. many un vieled women are respectful too.. the matter of God's order to viel is between God and them and we have no right to interfere...
I wrote too much, thanks for reading and God bless...
P.S. Don't listen to Deep (Zeft) Sky, He's half a man half a donkey...

I dont mind if Muslim women cover their hair because they want to...again that freedom of religion thing....but a large portion of the Muslim female population are forced to wear it cause of culture which can result in beatings, seclusion, and or death depending on which extreme group rules your country. That forces a negative image onto our beautiful religion and thats why people judge it as harsh and unnecessary and aiding in the degradation of women.
I also dont like to see people with it all hanging out but they have the right to do that so why cant they leave people alone that choose not to?

Assalamu A'alaekum,
First of all my respected sister, I would like to congratulate you on your enlightenment of entering in Islam. This is really a great blessing of Allah almighty on you.
Secondly, this is the problem of Satan, that he want to see every one to be same like him. The followers of Satan feel guilty bcoz they contradict with their inner most reality, the truth, the conscience.
May Allah almighty bless you more and more.
May peace be along with you.
