I'd say the event/s took place in that year because of Newton's unquenchable desire to always be front page news. The whole Apple-gravity thing is a farce, concocted by Sir Isaac, to draw attention away from the Great Fire of London, and focus it back on himself. Celebrities, they're all the same... No respect, not even for the laws of physics.
BTW, what do you think papparrazi were called in those days? Printing press-arrazi? Guthenberg-arrazi?

If you are alluding to the numerology of the year 1666, I think there is no significance at all. He (Newton) worked at home in the Summer of 1666 because his university, Trinity College, Cambridge, had closed down as a precaution against the Black Death. No more no less...

maybe we should skip any years that have recurring sixes in them, much like some buildings have no 13th floor. do you think everyone should have stayed inside in 1666, and done absolutely nothing productive for fear that later on, some kid would assert that the devil had something to do with their accomplishments? maybe you should be setting out a plan for what people should do in 2666.

The same thing that I thought when people said the Earth was going to end on June 6, 2006 (6/6/06).It is all superstitious nonsense to think man made dates have any magical meaning or that man made numbers have any magical meaning.

Makes me wonder what would have happened if there had been an apple tree blight in 1665.
