Congrats on your effort to quit, it will be the best choice you ever made. I quit Mar.26 2005, and I haven't looked back. I will share with you how I did it and maybe it will help. I decided on the 20th that I would quit on the 26th, giving myself almost a full week to prepare myself mentally. I marked off the days on the calender, and on the 26th at 10 pm I went outside with my ciggarettes sat down and smoked one, then said well it's time to do this. I took 2 ciggarettes out of the almost new pack, went to the outside trash can, and broke the whole pack to pieces, and said no more. Doing this physical act will tell your mind you are serious, because normally you would never do such a thing it shocks your brain into becoming serious. I smoked those last 2 ciggarettes, and told myself to enjoy this last one, because it will be your last, and it was. The first 2 weeks are hard but it gets easier. I suggest everyday you tell yourself over and over again "I'm a non smoker" and your mind will start to believe it....serious, what ever you put into your mind alot it starts to actually believe...remember 75% of the battle is menatl, and the physical is controlled by your mind aswell, so to quit smoking take control of your mind, and the physical will follow. most people suggest nothing but physicall things, like chewing gum, or exercising, or nicotene patches, and yes the exercise, and gum are fine, but the patches are just silly. Yes it's true some have success at them, but most don't. why? because, you are still feeding the same drug you are already addicted to, to your brain...thats not a shock to the system. remember the easy way in anything in li9fe is never the right way, the right way is always harder......to quit an addiction you have to shock your system, and by denying your system what it craves you take over your mind, because as a smoker your mind has taken over you. remember these pointers and you will succeed, if you don't the first time try again, if you want it bad enough, you will get it....tell yourself everyday " i'm a non smoker, i'm gonna be healthy", and also think of the difference often, such as now your clothes and surroundings want smell like smoke, your taste becomes clearer, you sleep much, much better, you can exert yourself more, and you can expect a longer life, not to mention the fact that after 5 years your lungs will be almost completely back to normal. do your body a favor, and help it clean itself, by not putting toxins into your system. I speak from first hand experience, I feel so much better, it's been 2 years and i will never look back, again congrats on making the choice to be a non smoker.....i don't personally know you, but i'm proud of you. if you need any support or anything feel free to email me....xtreme261@yahoo.com, guess you already knew that....take care.

I gave up smoking a few months ago cold turkey and it wasn't so bad which surprised the heck outa me since I had done it before and it was horrible. I think I was ready to quit in my mind which helped. I also bought some hard candy and ate a piece when I felt a craving. Someone also told me a story which I kept in the forefront of my mind...mostly because I am stubborn and it tickled me. Their father was Russian and had smoked 2 packs a day for decades until he had to give up for his health. He kept a cigarette in his top pocket and when he got a craving he would pull it out and look at it and say...who is stronger me or you? Then he would put it away until the next time. I am not advocating this but I did say it to myself a lot in the first days of giving up....who is stronger...me or a cigarette....it helped. Good luck.

Keep yourself busy - work, play, exercise, studying. And try to avoid the typical habits that inspire you to light up. Generally those are activities you light up for (like right after eating, working on the pc, watching TV, driving, etc) and some are hard to combat if they're things you have to do in a day. But just being aware of them and chosing to change the way you tackle them is a good fight. Good Luck. Hope you succeed!

Buy the large pack of Wrigley's cinnamon gum and every time you feel the urge to smoke, stick a piece of gum in your mouth and commence to chewing. The craving will last a few minutes, it varies with people, but keep chewing and don't quit quitting.

cut your cigarettes in half throw away the other half
therefore you will cut down if you will develop this habit.
and every week or so just cut more off as you go along.
and pretty soon you will notice improvement in everything even smoking in general.

I am very pleased that you want to stop smoking. Have you tried not to smoke for two weeks? it could be a benefit. Cold turkey is an old way to stop smoking, but a faster way is to purchase nicotine patches. Although it is very expensive to buy one, but it is a benefit for you.

Remember this, smoking is a sign of suicide. Do not even try it.! Many people who smokes wants to die young!

Maybe you should try a cigarette, or a cigar. Turkeys really don't like it much. They are harsh.
