discourage alcohol and drugs. We all agree that, these intoxicants are not only bad for health, but hampers a productive society.
Following are the verses in Quran about alcohol:
"O you who believe! Strong drink and games of chance and idols and divining arrows are only an infamy of Satan's handiwork. Leave it aside in order that ye may succeed." (5. Al Ma' idah: 90).

It is stated in the Qur’ân: “They ask you regarding wine and gambling. Say, in both of them is major sin, and there is some benefit for men, but the sin of them is far greater than benefit ” (Surah Baqarah)

Compared to the few limited benefits of alcohol its risks and harms are so varied that, perhaps so many disadvantages may not be present in any other thing.
1. It spoils ones facial features
2. Causes heart failure
3. Creates fights and enmity between people
4. Leads towards grave sins, often adultery and murder are the direct results of drinking.
5. Thousands of pounds are wasted in this vice

Ask forever, Islam is voice when you're weak, Most Muslims are aware of and try to avoid the major sins in Islam - murder, suicide, adultery, alcohol, gambling, usury, etc. Muslims are forbidden to harm themselves or others. Yet millions of Muslims all over the world are doing just that - harming, even killing themselves and their families. Islamic scholars have historically had mixed views about tobacco drugs and alcohol, and until recently, acohol drugs and cigarette smoking has not been unanimously forbidden or even discouraged. The mixed views on the subject came about because drugs are a more recent invention and did not exist at the time of the revelation of the Qur'an in the 7th century A.D. Therefore, one cannot find a verse of Qur'an or words of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) saying clearly that "Cigarette smoking is forbidden." However, there are many instances where the Qur'an gives us general guidelines, and calls upon us to use our reason and intelligence, and seek guidance from Allah about what is right and wrong. In the Qur'an, Allah says, “...he [the Prophet] commands them what is just, and forbids them what is evil; he allows them as lawful what is good, and prohibits them from what is bad..." (Surah al-Ar’af 7:157). So what are the evils of tobacco use, for your health and for your deen (religion)? Often the combination of alcohol and drugs is sins even more nauseating, Allah says, "...But spend not wastefully (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift. Verily spendthrifts are brothers of the devils...” {Surah al-Israa’ 17:26-27} And in an authentic hadith the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that: "Allah hates for you three things: gossipping, begging, and wasting money." In Libya. and other countries, drugs Alcohol and cigarettes are taxed heavily in order to discourage this habit and reimburse the government for the overwhelming health care costs to care for those afflicted with diseases caused by drugs. Smokers And drinkers often spend thousands of dollars a year that literally just go up in drink smoke and drugs.

You are obviously mistaken! Judaism, Christianity and every other sound religion prohibits drugs, social evils, and excessive alcohol. Alcohol is evil if it is taken in excess beyond what one can handle. If it is a daily habit or an addiction, then is the time for it to be evil. Islam is derived from Judaism and Christianity and took ideas about what is good and evil from these two great faiths. These two great faiths very much detest excessive drinking, alcoholism, drugs, and all social evils. It is great that Islam prohibits these also but do not say it is the ONLY ONE that does so.

Actually, you are quite wrong in stating that Islam is the only religion which prohibits alcohol and drugs. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the "Mormons" has the same prohibitions, going even further than Islam. As a Mormon, one is to abstain from alcohol, tobacco, coffee and tea - all being substances which harm the body. I know of no injunction in Islam which prohibits the last three substances.

"Islam is the only religion that prohibits alcohol, drugs and many other scoial evils. But none other religion discourage alcohol and drugs" - You don't know what you are talking about!!! I can tell that you've never been to a Church of Christ meeting. You might want to check out the facts before you make these claims. Or is that too difficult for you??

No, many other religions ban them also. It was kind of a fad for religions to ban stuff. Governments tend to be a bit more sane. Note that not all Muslim countries ban Alcohol or other drugs and what they do ban varies from place to place.
Almost everything has been banned at one time or another by some religion or another, including Hashish, Coffee, Tea, Tobacco, Kat.
You name it and religious nuts have banned it.

I know Baptists (protestants) and Mormoms prohibit these.

As a Catholic I believe that any abuse of this is a sin. Example, I can have a glass of wine with dinner but should not drink in excess, I shouldn't take drugs for recreation, sex is between married couples, and so forth. When we do any of these things within the wrong context or with bad intent, not only do we hurt ourselves, we hurt others. In those circumstances, I believe it is sinful.

Peace,
Mon :-)

All other religion don't prohibits alcohol and gambling, but they teach people how to differential right and wrong and self control. Thus whether prohibits alcohol and gambling or not become irrelevant.

All religions discourages such things, not only Islam. What is important is not what is banned but how you live out your life. Islam bans a whole long list of items but many Muslims I know does them all without a care in the world. They drink, they gamble and they womanise. By the way, Islam is the only religion that justifies "murder" by the issuance of a Fatwa to those whom they say have blesphemed their religion. What is more sinful - murder or drinking? You decide!
