They generate a very strong magnetic field that erases all the magnetically stored information on the tape. They're expensive because they contain a lot of copper and regulation equipment.

They're a waste of money, if you ask me. You can simply record over a tape that you don't want any more, or if you have some tapes that you want to throw away and make sure they don't get used (such as your "private performance" with your hubby/bf), just smash the cassette with a hammer and crumple the tape up with your hands.
