With most modern police radars, a radar detector will generally only warn you that you are going to get a ticket.

A RADAR detector detects the frequency used by police. However, many other objects emit the same frequency. Most RADARs in use by L.E. today have a hold ( or similar) button. What this allows us to do is have a powered RADAR unit that is not transmitting (projecting a beam). Once activated, the beam clocks a vehicle's speed and can be turned off just as quickly. No RADAR detector is capable of picking up any RADAR unit if it is in this mode. Once you hear the tone, the cop has you already. RADAR detectors are pretty worthless.

Your radar detector will only pick up a microwave beam that is directed at it. Even then, it will only pick up the beam if it is set to that beam's frequency. Radar guns use several different frequencies. The new laser speed guns can not be detected by the common radar detector.
So, your radar detector will only tell you that the cop driving towards you, has his radar speed gun activated. It will not tell you anything about the cop on the next street, or anywhere else.
Police scanners are simply specialized radios set to listen to police radio transmissions. They won't tell you anything about locations either.

So, Fsafad, you will just have to behave yourself. . .

No. Radar detectors (provided they even work like they claim to... which most rarely do) are designed to pick up on other radar signals. If a police officer (or anyone/anything else) lacks this particular beam, then it will not be detected.

A radar detector only activates if a radargun is directed towards it and is turned on. A police scanner is a radio that is set to the frequencies that police use to transmit to each other...essentially, it is an evesdropping device. Nothing picks up the presence of police just driving around except your own eyes or persons on the lookout for them who call you.

No. They detect the radar beam.
