A diesel engine will operate more efficiently at full load than at half load. Load the generator to its maximum capacity. Fuel consumption will increase, but it will be operating at higher efficiency.

To increase efficiency at your present power level, ensure minimum restriction from either the air filter or the exhaust. If liquid cooled, check the thermostat for proper operating temperature.

Check the ratio of fuel to air volume and if you can install a turbo or supercharger to increase the air ratio do so. Failing that try a
larger air filter that lessens the air restriction to the engine.
