First choice of treatment for hypertension usually is made with knowing the whole state of the patient. Beta blockers are not used specially if the patient has a low resting heartrate, but is more beneficial for those with a history of ischemic heart disease. Diuretics are used with caution for patients with unknown renal or kidney function. Other medications like ACE-inhibitors, or ARBs have their own pro's and cons as well. To this effect, one really cannot label a drug as first choice, rather a best choice is always made based on the general state of the patient.
