The issuing of duff passports has always been a problem in UK - nothing new. What is new however are the growing number of leaks within the system, so that more knowledge of what goes wrong gets out into the public domain.

All kinds of people and organisations manage to get their hands on UK passports. It is not difficult for people to get a UK passport by using dead people's identities or simply by using the stolen ID of someone else.

What is going to happen over the next few months is a tightening up of the system of issuing UK passports. Most first timers will need to go through a one to one procedure interview before being issued their first UK passport.

There really is no fool proof way of dealing with the problem. When a more complicated system is in start-up it is bound to lead to teething problems and this is where the criminal crowd jump in and take advantage of what's going wrong. They probably have insider help too.

The other thing to quietly bear in mind is that telling the Home Office that it is not fit for purpose does not exactly make you popular. The Civil Service are a law unto themselves. They know that government want certain things done but they are reluctant to change. It happens in any business that old habits die hard and Civil Servants are no different to the rest of us. They would prefer to carry on doing it how they always have. A big revamp of any system may result in people being moved from this office to that and then losing contact with files and heaven knows what. This is then where problems begin to start.

The Government admit to 10,000 mistakes but going by their track record that will only be the tip of the Iceberg. The Government tell fibs, spin news and manipulate figures every day for self serving purposes so how can we believe that there are only 10,000?

The home office needs a great big kick up the ****! I mean a few false passports would be acceptable but, come on! 10,000, its abit much!

Because they didn't know when they were doing it - and 10,000 is a ballpark figure, they now think it could be more than twice that.
