One year minimum for most babies. 2-3 years minimum for vegan babies. As long as possible for immune deficient babies.
You can go as long as you like, don't let anyone tell you how to care for your child. Breast milk is wonderful for all babies and toddlers, physically and emotionally. Most babies will wean themselves when they are ready (if their mothers let them).

I would nurse as long as I can. The WHO recommends until at least 2 years old. The longer you nurse, the less likely your baby will have allergies and illnesses.

Breast feeding is an issue that is different for every mother. Personally i believe that 6 - 8 months of feeding is plenty of time. I say this because at this age, babies should be getting all their nutrients from beginning to eat food. its each to their own but i think between 6 - 8 months is plenty.
