Can I go to a Malaria country from month 3 - 8 of my pregnancy? What is the chance of having a healthy baby. I have to go to Mozambique to be with my husband. It is our first child and I really need his support and love. He also needs to be part of the pregnancy.

Actually, you can fly until the last month of your pregnancy if you have had a healthy pregnancy until that point. The last month, because of labor, blood pressure risks etc most airlines won't even let you on if you want to fly. In contrast to the microbiologist's statment above...which astounds me for a scientist, the fetus is protected in the womb by maternal antibodies...and thereafter for 6 (traditional) -12 (new studies) months. There are plenty of preventative drugs out there, but I am uncertain as to what sort of effects they would have on your baby. It is a risk though and one that I personally would not take. If you are going to go anyway, try to find someplace with air conditioning and stay inside as much as possible to limit your exposure. Malaria as you know can be EXTREMELY deadly and I'm not so sure about the quality of Mozambique's healthcare system. Good luck in whatever you decide to do. Baby first, mother after.

I would strongly advise against tavelling to a country with malaria whilst pregnant. Your baby has no immune system to speak of, and any serious infection like malaria needs to be properly monitered.

Check with your doctor to find out if the medication would damage your baby at all.

You can't go anywhere till you're 8 months pregnant with the intention of returning. You're not allowed to fly at that stage. Also what happens if you go into premature labour in a country like that? - they won't have the specialist care for a premature baby like we do in Europe or America.

I wouldn't take malarial drugs when I was pregnant, and they don't provide 100% protection anyway.

No offence intended to those on here genuinely qualified to advise you, but YOU have no way of verifying that they are. A problem of this nature is best resolved by a visit to your doctor.

I suggest you go to the Doctors or International School of Tropical Diseases to ask your question.... why take the risk for yourself and your unborn child... how selfish is that?

what the hell is your husband doing in Mozambique? if it's that important to you, shouldn't you tell him that and if he's a good husband, shouldn't he rush home to be by your side?

Take preventive medication weekly and go there.
Weekly chloroquine is safe.
