i hate him, i really do, he's the meanest person i've ever met and the worst part is, all of his anger is completely unprovoked. being an offspring i worry that i might grow up to be just like him and have my kids secretly hate me. what do i do? i try to avoid him but that only gets me so far, and he's the not the kind of person you can talk to or reason with.

You sound like my 18 year old son. I don't know the specifics, but you will not always live there and you probably won't change him. My son says the same you do, but constantly pushes my husband's buttons by not following through, being disrespectful of him, not listening, and on a daily basis then wonders why my husband gets upset after being nice about asking 10 times. It always takes two, just try to find out what you might be doing wrong and I'm sure he'll ease up. My husband....he loves his kids but gets frustrated when he sees them being irresponsible. Not everyone can express themselves......be glad when you didn't live in the earlier centuries as his personality would have been considered normal. Best wishes and good luck! Remember, at 18 you can always move on so if it doesn't change, start working, saving, and then make plans to move on....seek help from a counselor to help get you on the right track to get ready for your life, then you'll be happier.

I read this book that really helped me a lot--its The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense by Suzette Haden. There are books out there about how to make snappy comebacks--this isn't one of them. It's about how abusers set you up and how to avoid them.

People say, "just ignore him", but they don't tell you how. This book tells you how.

Leave, He will never change. Don't let him drag you dwn. If you have not seen him in a long time, he might be nicer. My dad was constantly moody and depressing. I left and now I see the sun.

I guess you could leave and live with someone else or how about talking to someone at your local housing authority about the section 8 program.

Just leave him alone. My dad was like that too. So don't bother about him.
