I have dyed black hair, and I want to dye the underside bright red without having to bleach or strip it. I tried Colour Rays, which turned it a reddish color, and some spots turned out brighter than others. Is there a good brand that colors over black hair? Or should I just try the same one again, hoping for brighter results?

I think if the color you want is a bright red, you will probably have to bleach it before getting the shade of red you would like. If you are talking about the burgundy red, that shade might probably not need you to bleach the black.
Reds are also the first colors to fade in hair dye, then brown, then the lighter shades of brown and dark blonde. Keep this in mind if you plan on bleaching/stripping. As your hair grows out, the red will fade FAST and you will need to be pretty consistent with the touch up in order to keep the red red.

Sorry unfortunately to get the results you want. Red roots and black ends you must first, Dye your hair one color with a creme developer preferably a 40 (though most get 20) but because of such a dramatic color and also the black hair to color 40 is recommended. You can go to sallys beauty supply or any other "supply" that carries professional products.
Secondly after the 1st red. You would then get your black and carefully braise the tips. one thing is that most beauty supplies carry many different products and ones that are specially formulated to stick to the hair and are a very thick type base. for such results as you will accomplish
if done correctly

you can't dye your hair any color lighter than black without stripping or bleaching, the reason you had some spots before is probably from spots missing the black pigment from when you died it black but all you will get is a little hint of red but you wont get the bright red you are looking for without getting rid of the black first

The only way i got black hair dye out on my hair was to bleach it. after you bleach it you can use manic panic if you want a really bright red but that is not a permanent dye so good luck

if you have blonde hair it will naturally get bleached by the sun in the summer. There had been this guy in my class who else had golden blonde hair that had been a medium brown near the bottom part. When he came back to university after summer vacation, it was practically platinum blonde!

Jet black hair. I have really dark brown hair and I consider dark hair looks better. I avoid really like blonde hair.
