Pancho ~
It's kind of hard to write. Given his past troubles with drugs and alcohol abuse maybe he's looking for a new way to make some cash a lot of fighters think that making the transition from fighter to trainer is a easy one but nothing can be further from the truth. This is like writing "A good race car driver is a good mechanic"
Buddy and Freddie are the top two most visible followed by the Mayweathers but there's also Greg Haugen, Robin Blake and a host of other former fighters throwing their hat into the ring.
I guess it really comes down to their talent pool. How good are the fighters that they are working with? Andy Rooney from 60 minutes could come in as Oscar De La Hoyas Trainer for the Mayweather fight and if Oscar wins, everyone will say "What a great trainer he is" but if Oscar does lose, then it would be because Andy Rooney was De La Hoyas trainer.
It's a matter of lets wait and see. I hope that he does become a really good if not great trainer. There has been a little bit written about this in the papers and as long as it isn't the usually negative stuff about boxing it works for me.
Thanks for the question Pancho.

Angelo Dundee said it best in a book I read titled "In the Corner" if you can get a hold of the book it's a great read. "A trainer is only as good as the guy sitting on the stool". Enough said.
Eprometheus - Dundee was getting the point across that you can be a great trainer but if you don't have a talented focused fighter of championship caliber to work with you're not going to be recognized as a good or great trainer. i.e. the fighter sits on stool in the corner between rounds. Dundee's play on words I guess. Hope that clarifies partner.

Brent,
What does that quote mean? - "A trainer is only as good as the guy on the stool".
Please clarify.
As far as Pernell a trainer, he will only instill the ability to run away from fighting since that is all he did when he was in the ring.

He would be a good trainer however, his reliability would be highly questionable. Before a fighter were to choose Sweet Pea as a trainer, he would definately have to consider Sweet Pea's other dedication, Coke, and Im not talking about the soft drink. As a boxer, if anybody in your team does anything, YOUR name comes up even if you didnt do anything. So any figher picking Pernell as his/her trainer would eventually have to answer questions regarding how his trainers rehab is going. Definately, not a good choice as a trainer.

I think Whitaker will make a fairly good trainer. His fighters will be defensive tacticians and would be sound on the attack, too. I think most of their fights would reach the distance, too.

He was the undisputed Lightweight Champion. So he shouldn't really have a problem.
