ibuprofen works best (as long as she isn't allergic). take 200-400mg every 6 hours but no more than 1200mg in 24 hours.

make sure she dresses lightly (cotton is best b/c it's breathable).

avoid using heavy blankets to cover up-these will make her temp go up

take lukewarm bath-this will help her relax and won't make her temp higher. if she uses water too cold or hot-her temp will rise.

drink lots of fluids-fever can cause dehydration. water and gatorade work best

fever that lasts longer than 4-5 days should be checked out by a dr.

hope she feels better soon!!

the rule of thumb is "feed a cold and starve a fever". Doesn't mean she should starve. What it means is that she should take more liquids like chicken soup and orange juice, plus taking aspirin to bring down the fever. Maybe take some vitamins too.

If the fever persists she should call the doctor, get an appointment and have a general check-up. They can tell by the tests they give if there is something wrong that the fever is indicating. Otherwise the fever will go down in a couple of days.

I am sure you have heard of the saying, "Feed a fever, feed a cold"....what do you mean that's not how it goes?! Well if I was sick and you told me I couldn't eat I would probably rip your arm off and beat you with it. Honestly the starving/feeding part isn't really a good idea. When you're sick, your appetite often decreases because food doesn't taste as good and you're tired. Fighting off sickness demands energy. You're best off eating light, healthful food:whole grains, protein, veggies, soup and of course, drinking lots of water. A healthy diet everyday rich in vitamin C and antioxidants has been shown to help boost immunity as well.

Your mother's fever is a normal and important part of her body's immune system response to her infection. This level of fever is NOT dangerous, but rather, it is helpful! It is helping your mother get well.

Best wishes.

lots of fluids, tylenol, and rest. don't let her bundle under lots of blankets -the chills are her body's way of cooling her.
