Hello everyone,

I am a 25 y/o male and a junior in college, and I would like to join the Army Reserve. I wanted to join after high school when I was 17 , but was reluctant, I know I am a bit old now, but it took me this long to mature enough to make this decision. I would like to leave for boot camp in June of 07 and im wondering how long I will be away, and how much I will be paid per month for my time at boot camp. Will I be back before september for the new school quarter? I emailed GoArmy.com but they never answered my email.

I also have to know how much I will be paid per month while I am away at boot camp, as I have a car payment and other bills that cannot be put on hold. Can anyone please help me?

I dont want to go down to the recruiting station to ask, as I do not want to be pressured into anything.

My best advice for you as a junior in college is to wait until you complete college before joining the military. If you join now, you will have to enlist as a private, receive either E-1 or E-2 pay, and will be limited to enlisted job opportunities. If you wait until you complete your college degree then you can enter the Army reserve and, following basic training, attend the Officer basic course to become an officer. While in basic training, you will be paid as an E-4. Following, during Officer basic course, you will receive E-5 pay until you graduate and receive your Officer's commission; at which point you will receive O-1 pay.

Refer to the chart at the following link for the pay scale.

Well for one thing good for you about joining the Army you will never make a better decision. Depends on what your MOS is on how long you will be gone. Basic is 9 weeks long and you will have a MINIMUM of 4 weeks of AIT. So that puts your total training at about 3-4 months. So personally, I doubt you will be back in time for a new school semester. The reserve components do have a split-training option where you go to basic the summer between your years in civilian school and then to your AIT the next summer. However I do not recommend this as it is much easier to go straight through. Also if you go reserve go Guard because they have more money to spend on schools, greater variety of jobs to choose from (combat arms MOSes), and better bonuses and benefits. And yes you can put your pills on hold while you are on active duty including IADT. If anyone tells you otherwise including the billing company they are either lying or misinformed. This is also a good way to get out of a 2 yr. cellphone contract if you have one btw. With your 3 years of college as you have now you will enter as an E3 and be paid approx. 1500 per month during your training. If you are serious about joining though basic is 9 weeks and the shortest AIT's I know of are 13M (MLRS crewmember) is 4 weeks and 21R (Electrician) is 5 weeks. These are good jobs too so don't turn them down because they are short. And if you don't go down to the recruiter and ask then you will probably never know if you can be in the military so you better start there he/she is the one who can best advise you on all of your choices. Any other questions let me know.

The military recently got a raise, but 3 years ago when my hubby left for bootcamp (regular enlisted Army) he got apprx. $1000/month. (give or take) . You can do a search for military pay scales and find out for sure. I believe you'd get paid at an E- 0 level. As with any job it takes awhile to see a first check so be ready for that. As for basic it was 11 weeks. Like I said, do a search and you will find the specifics on all this info.... it's all out there.

Hey, got some good news for you, the Army has a brand new Branch and are looking for Warrant Officers, talk to a recruiter and tell him what your goals are, Go Guard so you can continue to go to school, but with your college, go warrant. If you have any problems or dont know anyone in the Military, im in now and you can email me if youd like, I will try and get you help and I wont BS you either.Just click on my name and email me.

Bootcamp is about 13 weeks long. The reason is that they will teach you how to march, how to use firearms and other weapons, also they will teach you rules and regulations and also all the military terminology.
Don't listen to people that tell you that you shouldn't join the military because you are going to get sent to Iraq. Not everybody that joined get sent to Iraq. Depending on your skills it will determine where you will go. Do you have a bachelors degree? If you do, you can become a commisioned officer and get more pay than the enlisted. I would suggest to wait until you are done with college.

When I was drafted in '68, the reserves in my unit were gone for 6 months training. I believe it is the same now. Pay? I have no idea. It was $96 a month when I went in.

dont believe anything a recruiter says to you, sounds to good to be true it is. Get everything in writing, and make copies. The military is great but recruiters have an unrealistic quota that they HAVE to make or its their a**. You will make decent money but will gain a great amount of pride. make sure your pee is clean cuz they will test you as soon as you say you wanna sign up.
