The Tomcat outlived its usefulness. It was built to fire the AIM-54 Phoenix Missile and ended up doing everything but antisubmarine warfare. It's AWG-9 radar was once state of the art. It's antiquated now. It was an incredibly maintenance intensive aircraft.

Although it did rock at one point, stealth took over. The F-22 was tested to be a far superior aircraft. The F14 couldn't take on 144 F-18s , 4 at a time, without losing one aircraft to enemy fire like the F-22 has in training.
The modern Russian, European and Chinese aircraft can outfly the F-14 now.

the f14 tomcat was a large and heavy aircraft that was ageing, and was quite inferiour in standards to the F/A18 E/F super hornet now introduced into the US navy.
I believe that 'in with the new, out with the old' is a good phase to stick to anyways...
cheers,
josh
