About 6 years ago, I was only 17 years old, when I was in jail and looking at a passable 15 years or more in prison. I guess I felt like my life was over. I took a comb and scratched my face. I still have scars. I also developed an involuntary inability to eat for 5 days and dropped 15 pounds. I know alot of people scar there arms and their legs but is there something special that causes a person to consider scaring their face?

Self hatred. It's obvious you were going through a lot and had a lot of anger towards yourself. You wanted to hurt yourself, you wanted to look as bad on the outside as you felt on the inside. You simply didn't care about yourself. You couldn't do anything about the pain you had on the inside so you inflicted pain on the outside as a way of gaining control over your emotions. There's a lot of reasons and it's not all that strange what you did considering the circumstances. The point is that it was all about the negative feelings you had on the inside. It's similar to why people scar their arms or legs...the fact that it was your face simply means that you wanted the world to "see" your pain, your anger, etc. You had that much more hatred towards yourself than someone who would cut their arm and then cover it with a shirt. For you, it had to be visible to everyone, especially yourself.

Scratching ones face is anther form of self injury. It does not matter what part of the body is harmed, if it was done intentional it is self injury. People sometimes do that when they are under an enormous am out of stress, angry, scared, helpless, or do not know what else to do. sometimes they do it to punish themselves. It is rarely done for attention, and people who say that do not understand what it is all about.
People who self injure other parts of their bodies and cover it up is because they are ashamed or embarrassed about hurting themselves. Sometimes the feelings are so intense they are not thinking about where to harm themselves, they just do it compulsively.

they just feel invisble and want to be noticed, also self-hatred, to punish themselves by mutilating themselves, also masochism--relieving emotional pain by causing physical pain, such as cutting one's self.
