Reading definitely makes people better writers. After reading so much, you sort of get a feel for the way the sentence structures are supposed to be and all the grammatical errors are somehow in your memory, even if you don't know it. You also get ideas, even if you still don't know it. Also, reading is just plain fun!

Oh, they call that exposure...lol It's the ground work for creativity, you know "food for thought". I love writing and have a couple of projects in "the works"
One of the things I liked when I was a substitute teacher, I would ask the students' for 5 words that I wrote on the board and then I would create a story using all 5 of the words. I really surprised them a couple of times...it was fun. They complained of being stuck for ideas to write about and I should them some impromptu efforts.
Reading expands not only our world but also our imagination. I can't get enough. I'm always reading more than one "work" at a time too.

Reading helps us by:
-teaching us about style
- showing us different personalities from our own
- giving you a better sense of grammar, etc.
- letting us "peek" into the lives of others
- showing us how plots/subplots influence the story and characters
Only through reading other's work can we truly find our own. Remember, Shakespeare was influenced by Greek theater and ancient stories. Perhaps no story is original, but the way we tell it is; that's what reading helps us do -- discover our style.

We learn to talk by hearing those around us talk and then trying it out ourselves.
We become better writers by reading the writing of others and by writing ourselves. We are most likely to write things similar to the things we read.

yes, for it gives you a wider perspective on the things you write. since you could see the viewpoint of other writers, you could look at the topic that you're writing at different sides. and also, writing is like a cup... you must be filled with knowledge first before you could pour out knowledge. for a cup aint full cant pour anything for in have nothing
