I simply find myself travelling more and more and would like to take advantage of being a private travel agent.

You need to either go to travel school and get a certification, or get employment with a travel agency and they will train you. After a time with the agency, and it can vary by agency, they will issue you a card. The bottom line is you have to be employed in the travel industry as an agent, with an airline, or in some capacity and that organization can issue you a card after certain requirements are met.
