I am having Breast Reduction surgery soon and so of course during the operation I have to remove my nipple ring. I know that it varies with everyone but I am just wondering if anyone has had personal experience on how long it took for their nipple piercing to close up after the jewellery was removed. My surgeon has told me that it can be put back in about 2 days after the op, but I do not know if it would have closed up by then. I have only had it pierced for 6 months .

Thanks, in advance for answering

**When I say that my surgeon has advised that I can put it back in 2 days this is because it is the first time that my dressings will come off and be changed- my nipples will be bandaged from after the op til then.

LuckyGreen5 you do not know what you are talking about- my breasts are made of solid breast tissue, not fat. I lost 10 kilograms last year and my breasts grew 2 full cup sizes, I am now a 34G, being reduced to a 34D- they could not grow back that much unless I put on excessive amounts of weight which I don't plan to do.

Marcia E- your answer really did not help, I don't know why you bothered writing it. I am offended for my surgeons sake- he is Nationally and Internationally recognised, and he is the most qualified and reputable Plastic Surgeon in Australia

I took my nipple ring out long before I had my reduction. I wasnt extremely fond of it so it didnt bother me. During my surgery I also had to take my tongue ring out and that grew over by the time I was finally able to get off the morphine and "sober" enough to put it back in. Anyways back to your question, after your surgery your breasts are gonna be swollen and covered in stitches and steri strips you might not want to put the peircing back in and risk an infection or something. If its grown over by the time you are ready to put it back in, just get it done again...after the surgery you will be able to handle that pain again no problem..trust me.

It may close up in that time. It likely won't heal over, but the hole will probably shrink. On the other hand, you may be fine. It's different for everyone.

You have a couple of options.

You can get a taper, to stretch the hole open again when you're able to put the rings back in. I've never had a reduction, but when I was in college my roommate did. She was in a lot of pain for a few weeks afterwards. I don't think you will want to go to the trouble of tapering your nipples two days after the surgery. It's up to you, but I can't see myself wanting to do it.

The other option is to try to put them in when you can. If it won't go in easily don't force it. If it doesn't work, you can wait untill your surgical wounds are healed and get them pierced again.

They're not great options, but I think they're about the only ones you have. Knowing the nature of the surgery, (I've been thinking about a reduction for years, and have done a lot of research on them), I doubt your surgeon would allow you to wear a retainer during the procedure.

Good Luck!

Well, for something like this retainers really aren't an option. Sadly for your health and to reduce the risk of causing harm to the piercing, I don't suggest you attempt to put the jewelry back in later. Though everyone heals up differently, two days is a good amount of time for your body to start healing that area and reinserting jewelry could tear the piercing and cause numerous problems (infection, nerve damage and physical damage to your nipple). Its only been pierced for 6 months so there is a chance that the piercings aren't fully healed, which means greater risk that they will close up.

Like ear piercing, nipple piercing do close up. As to the rate that it closes may differ for individuals.

Some people are 'lucky' that theirs does not close up at all.

Since you trust your surgeon to do the breast reduction, you should also trust him when he says you can put it back in 2 days time.

For your info, whenever I don't wear my ear rings, I always have a toothpick sliced to the size of ear rings & leave it on my pierced ears to prevent it from closing up. Maybe you can consider this on your nipple (after your op of course).

Good Luck for your op.

well i dont think your nipple piercing is even fully healed yet.. they can take up to a year.. so i think they would close up fast.. since you have only had them for such a short abmount of time... you ned to keep the jewelry in for 6 months straight.. cant you wear a retainer or anythign at all?? but peopel heal at different rates. but you have also only had the piercing for a short time.. increasing your risk of the piercing closing up within those 2 days.. but then againw when are you having the surgery?? soon next year??

if next year then you wold be better off leaving them out..

did they hurt? ive been wanting mine done.. does itin crease the sensitivity? what was your experience ?

I find it ludicrous that your doctor is going to let you put a piercing into breast 2 days after major surgery. Sound dangerous you may want to seek the advice of another doctor who is a board certified plastic surgeon.

It will not close up in 2 to 7 days but hope ou will rethink about breast reduction.Do you know that once its done and if you gain weight then you will have it big again. It will take time but its going to be big sometime. I run a retirement home and I see all this with old people. Its very hard to face the fact but it is true.
