I agree with your statement, however I would also like to add that people will turn away from God when they don't understand Him and expect Him to be a genie, and when He doesn't perform as expected, they blame Him for the wrong things that happen in their lives or in this world. People also turn away from God when they feel uncomfortable with being confronted with the fact that to be a follower of God is to try to lead a life pleasing to God. People often don't want to give up their lifestyle in order to follow God, yet they don't realize that their life and the way they handle life will improve, not get worse, if they follow God.

The very first first sin, pride, continues to turn a person away from God's call to righteousness.
It is through a person's pride that they believe they know more than the God who made them.
The bible speaks of these persons:
2Ti 3:1 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty.
2Ti 3:2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
2Ti 3:3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good,
2Ti 3:4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
2Ti 3:5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
Rom 1:26 For these reasons "...God gave them up to dishonorable passions."
(ESV translation)
Yes, a believer's personal behaviors may cause the weak in the faith to stumble. These believers will be judged for their own sins accordingly. But, this does not mean that a bad witness causes another to fall away. Those that reject God's call to righteousness have already hardened their hearts through pride, just as Pharaoh did.

A loving person does not necessarily have to believe in God. A sharp tongue can also house a humble soul who does not suffer fools gladly.
God is a concept. God is a name derived by man.
Do I believe in a higher power ? I'm not sure but I pray to many higher powers including God.

I think that modern society turns people away from God. With all the bad press out there when dealing with believers, it eventually rubs off on the populace. You know, like it's just not "cool" to believe. It's alot easier to take the wide road than to live right and take the road less traveled.

People come across bad people at work everyday but it doesn't keep people from going to work. People don't go to church and turn away from God because they want to be in charge of their lives. They don't want to give up control and live by anothers standards even if it is God. People will act like God doesn't exist, or blame another's bad witness as excuses for themselves. Who is going stand before God when he asks them why they denied Him and spent their lives on themselves and then respond "Someone was rude to me 30 years ago at church and it's their fault." How childish and stupid but I'll bet millions will.

I agree that the sharp tongued theists have something to do with it, but even more so is the lack of evidence for the existence of god. I try to govern my principles on reason, and faith doesn't seem to have any redemptive attribute.

I think it's because
1. their past experience with people who talk about God and failed to be a good role model.
2. they fail to distinguish God teachings (in Bible, Qoran or any religious book) with the people teaching it.
3. their ego doesn't allow them to believe because believing in God may mean to them as being weak

The bible is choppy and says different things throughout. And frankly it's written quite badly. And God doesn't actually answer people when they pray. So many people don't get what they truly deserve in life, even if they do have faith and pray. Many more people get too much in life and are spoiled who don't ask for it. That's it.
