I fed my kittens "Natural Choice" pouch which is listed in the recall list of foods that causes kidney failure.... but when I checked the back for the "Best by date" it's different than the ones listed in the recall... does that mean the foods are OK???????

My kittens were fed this food for the past two weeks (not every day) just once every 2-3 days.... they do seem lethargic now while in the past they always ran around and played. Last time I fed them this food was couple of days ago... so if they were infected wouldn't they be dead by now??????

Should I take em to the vet???????

You should definitely take them to the vet and have their kidneys checked. I had to watch an 11 month old cat get euthanized today from terrible kidney failure he got from eating Special Kitty. Please get them checked just in case, you can stop it from progressing further if they do have it.

If the dates do not match, then at this time that food is not part of the recall. And so far, it is ONLY sliced or chunk meat in gravy canned or pouches. However, it's still not known at this time what the exact cause of the toxicity is, so I would definitely keep a close watch on them. If you are worried, you can have the vet run bloodwork or a urinalysis, or at least a urine specific gravity if they aren't ill at this time. When the kidneys fail, the first thing that happens is the kidneys can't concentrate urine. So if you have the urine checked and it's very dilute (low specific gravity) then you should have blood work done.

The date ranges involved in the recall are *not* the same as the "best used by date." The dates referred to in the recall refer to a code used by the maker that indicates the date of manufacture - the code is on the bottom of the can. Pet Connection and Banfield Pet Hospitals have indicated that kidney failure can develop over a period of time - so they are urging people whose pets may have eaten the tainted food to have them screened for kidney problems whether or not they are displaying symptoms at the moment. You can google Banfield Pet Hospital and Pet Connection for more info.

Good appetite is an excellent sign. I also had the same concerns as you. I fed my cats a Eukenuba canned food that was on the list, but the production dates did not match. I was releived but alarmed enough not to give my cats anymore of it. Like you, I gave them Eukanuba only once or twice a week.

I switched food completely Friday night. I also thought my cats seemed less active than usual... but their appetites have not diminished an iota... and their toilet habits remain the same.

If your cats have eaten contaminated food, they would be vomiting... several times... they will look depressed... lose their appetites... want to drink water more than usual... pee a lot more... as well as become very lethargic.

perhaps our own alarm make us imagine that out kitties are less active than usual? I took note today and the younger one was zooming and jumping around in the outdoor enclosure after he woke from a long nap. And the older one ran and tried to climb a tree this morning during our daily "walkies."

if they were infected, no, they do not necessarily have to be dead by now...

relax, take a deep breath, your cats are probaly fine. make sure to stop feeding the nutro pouched food (their dry food is still ok though) and keep a close eye on your cats.

any sign of loss of appetite, change in how often they pee or if they start to act really lethargic (tired, not active) then you may want to seek the opinion of a vet.

if they continue to eat and act normally, you're fine.

You'll miss your kittens more than money for a blood test. A blood test would quickly rull out kidney problems. Who trust what brands/dates are listed right now, they keep adding to the list.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.
