When I go to the add/remove programs feauture on my pc I recognize some applications listed but some are just very short abbreviations that I don't understand.
How can I find out what programs they go to and If I need them or not?

Well most tell you what they are, in some way, you can always click remove once and it might give you more information, (there should be a popup that says are you sure you want to remove """""""" and all its componants. If that dont help google what you see.. You should come up with something.

There shouldn't be any shortened names in there.
I would be asking myself just what I've been loading in and where it all came from.

Most times, you can simply click on the "Support" link beside the "Change/ Remove" and you'll get some idea of what it is.
