until you get the basics down....go with a less expensive set maybe from a newspaper( classifieds) that way if you determine that you do not enjoy the game your not out alot of$$$$$$$$ you can always go get some custom made taylor mades(about 1100$$) later..the clubs won't determine how you play early on

Don't spend big bucks on this years clubs. I would recommend going to a larger golf place and seeing if you can get some demo clubs or last years models. At many places, you can also try hitting a couple different clubs to see how they feel. Go for something forgiving on off center hits and will help you get the ball in the air.
Also go the TGW.com. They have sales on overstock clubs from last year. You can get a really nice set of irons for a couple hundred instead of paying $600 or $700. Internet buying is a little scary, but this place is great and even have a 30 day play guarantee on many clubs.

Go to walmart. and buy a starter set for about 100 bucks. you get the bag and a putter. 99.9 percent of people cant hit the ball for crap when they start so it makes no difference. a beginner cant tell the difference in a walmart club, and a ping, or taylor made that cost 400 dollars. plus you make dings, and sky marks all over them. all this stuff about get fitted when u start is so much bull. you might not like the game. u could just hate the hot weather or all the time it takes. and some people are never coordinated enough to play some types of sports. a good example is when u were in school if u were one of the last one chosen in the play games. then it might be a struggle to learn some coordination. hence do the wise thing. spend a hundred bucks see if u like it. then trade them in at play them again or something like that for a better set. dont buy a new set to u can at least shoot around 100 with no do overs or second chances.

I think a nice set of clubs for a beginner are the Tommy Armour 845s. You can find these clubs on eBay or at stores that sell used sports equipment, such as Play It Again Sports, for under $300. I got my first set of golf clubs when I was 7 years old and they were modified 845s. When I became a teenager I bought an adult sized set of the same clubs because they were dependable and easy to replace if something got lost or broken. When I got better and stopped growing, I had clubs custom made for me. However, I still have my 845s around for when someone wants to play a round and does not have their own clubs. Don't waste your money on expensive clubs until you decide if you will stick with golf.

As a beginner, don't invest too heavily in clubs. I would also advise you to not get custom fitted for clubs, as your swing will probably change considerably after practice, lessons, etc. Most club manufacturers have "beginner" sets, that have a wider sole and larger sweet spot to help new golfers get the ball airborne and minimize mis-hits. Callaway, Cleveland, Nike, Ping, Cobra, etc. all have these types of irons, and you can find many good quality sets on ebay for lower prices. Start with irons first, get comfortable with your swing, and then move onto the woods. A swing is easier to learn and repeat with an iron than a wood. Good Luck!

I would invest more in lessons, range time and course time before I would invest in an expensive set of clubs right off the bat.
First, you need to understand your game and develop a comfort zone. There are a lot of nuances with each brand of clubs that might not compliment your game.
Once you are decent, then you can go to golf centers and try out different brands of clubs.
You might find that you carry different brands of woods, irons and putter like I do.
Good luck!

If I were you and you want quality clubs then I would go to your local golf pro shop to get custom fitted with clubs. there are many top brands that custom fit your clubs to you. and it does not cost that much more for them to do it, you can get a great set of clubs for less than what the other guy said, I would expect between 500 to 800 dollars.

Try out alot of different brands to see what feels good to you. However nike has a relatively inexpensive set of beginner clubs called slingshot oss that are perfect for beginners. They are easy to hit, forgiving on mishits. As you get better you will see that they are difficult to use when you want to work the ball. Good luck.

if there is someone in your family that golfs... i would suggest borrowing their clubs and taking lessons.
when you take lessons.. you are getting a good feel for the game. some people don't like private lessons but, i personally love them because you can get more 1-on-1 attention and you can improve your game faster. and once you are getting better and having a better feel for the game... you can ask the pro that is giving you lessons to reccommend clubs for you. then they can custom fit you can get you the right clubs that can help your game.
if you don't have a family member that golfs and you can't borrow their clubs. when you contact the pro to start lessons... ask him what you should do. they usually have clubs you can hit or borrow.
feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions!!
good luck!!!
