He is an 11 year old Coonhound/Great Dane mix.
The recent tainted food NOT an issue here ... he gets only dry food.
This evening when I came home there were two huge piles of vomit on the floor, then he vomited an even larger pile a bit later. It appeared to be more food than he has been fed today, but I don't know ... he hasn't had opportunity to get into any garbage or anything -- it did all appear to be his dog food. Otherwise he seems fine and normal.
Any ideas or suggestions? Should I just watch him?

I will definitely be calling the vet tomorrow and likely taking him in ... just wanted some input in the meantime. I just lost my 16 yr old chihuahua a month ago ... so am kinda ... concerned ... too soon ....

A chihuahua and a coonhound/great dane - What a great combination of dogs! I can see you truly love your dogs as their ages clearly show how well cared for they are.
It sounds like you've already decided to take the dog to the vet, which is what I would recommend. It sounds like this is unusual behavior for your dog.
Here's hoping this was just a stomach virus and will pass naturally and that your dog is back to normal very soon. So sorry to hear of the loss of the chihuahua. You're doing the right thing.

Pichi, i am so sorry that your coonhound is not feeling well. if you give him his food free choice, please take it up...let him go without food until after he sees the vet. however, make sure he has plenty of water down. if it isnt to late, put a good size sample of the vomit in a large ziploc, this will help the vet. also, if you can catch him when he has a bowel movement, take a sample of that too. he may be constipated, or sometimes as dogs and cats get older, their stomaches get sensitive and cant handle certain things found in normal feeds. someone above me suggested dehydration...you can rule that out by taking a bit of skin at his shoulders/neck and lifting up, let it go, if it returns to its place slowly, he is dehydrated, the slower it returns the more dehydrated, but if it snaps back, then dehydration isnt a concern. i wish you the best. please let me know what the vet says. thank you.

It is possible that he could have a bowl blockage that would only be able to be check by his vet. Or he could have eaten something poisonous. At his age it is safer to have him looked at because it might be something that needs medical attention. Hope all is well with him.
It is also possible he could be depressed if he just lost his mate only one month ago. Watch his moods, he might just need some real loving form him mom to let him know it's okay. They have feeling just like people

Could he have gotten into poison outside (groundhog, etc.)?
Is he running fever and acts like he feels bad? If so, take him to see a vet this evening.
If not, and he acts fine enough to wait until tomorrow a.m., have him checked by his vet. He may have just an upset stomach but it could be something more serious.

Watch him for now. Call your vet in the morning to see if they think you should bring him in. With a big guy that age I would take him in just to be on the safe side.

When was his last physical? If greater that 6 months without blood work than maybe time to do, to check if all his organs are functioning as they should

make sure he is drinking plenty of water, when dogs are on in years they tend to get dehydrated easily. I would definetly take him to the vet as soon as you can.

i have a male heeler, 12 years old. he had a bowel obstruction. if he eats, drinks and goes to the bathroom without blood, you are probably ok. any loved pet, if you get too worried, go to your vets.....

Has he been having regular bowel movements? or has it been diarrhea. You may want to get it checked out as it may be a bowel obstruction.

don't just watch him....take him to the vet...it could be major life threatening or minor no problem....but it is better to be safe than sorry....go to the vet
