Depending on your situation, you may already be a citizen. If one of your parents was a citizen at birth, you probably are, but there are limitations. You should consult an immigration attorney if this is the case.

If your father naturalized while you were under 18 and you were living in the US as a permanent resident in his custody, you automatically became a citizen.

(a)--General.
To be eligible for citizenship under section 320 of the Act, a person must establish that the following conditions have been met after February 26, 2001:
(1)--
The child has at least one United States citizen parent (by birth or naturalization);
(2)--
The child is under 18 years of age; and
(3)--
The child is residing in the United States in the legal and physical custody of the United States citizen parent, pursuant to a lawful admission for permanent residence.

Again, without knowing all the details of your situation, it is hard to give an exact answer. Read the instructions to form N-600 to see if they apply to your specific situation. If you're still not sure, a consultation with an immigration attorney seems like a good idea.

Interesting question! If your father was a US citizen at the time of your birth ... you are without a doubt a citizen! If your father was naturalized after your birth, you must apply for citizenship, and I don't even know how to do that ... I was born on US soil, of people who were born in the US (3 generations on Dad's side, Mom's side a little difficult to tell ... anywhere from 3 generations to beyond written records!)

Best guess, go to your local (or nearest) ICE office and get the straight info!

Since I have never been through the process, I am clueless as to what is involved! Get the "straight dope" from the best possible source to be sure!

You have the choice whether to become a US citizen or not since you are already of the age of majority. Thus, file your application for US citizenship and support it with the documents of your father and residency in the US.
