If we hope to reach a common understanding across the planet, we need a common language. English is the defacto common language. Yes, I know it is not the language of the majority of the people on the planet, but it is the one language that science, business, and politics speaks.

No the "white europeans" didn't learn the language of North America because there wasn't one, there were dozens.

How many versions of "we are all immigrants" are there?

English should be the official language because the country currently known as the United States of America was once an English colony, and the colonists spoke English. When the colonies declared independence, they fought a war against England and won. Then, they wrote this thing called the Constitution, and established laws and stuff like that. And it was all, like, written in English. And when we had waves of immigrants, regardless of where they were from, they all learned to speak English. It's called assimilation.

I thought this was a serious question before I saw that nonesense you added.

Over 200 languages are spoken here. English is the language we speak to each other and in government to communicate.

Should English be the 'official' language? I really don't care. English is the official language in California already, and you couldn't really notice, now could you?

Actually, English was made the official language of California in the 1980s. It is just a clear example of why this issue isn't very meaningful.

Studies have shown that there are pockets in America where English is not very well known. This causes problems in many areas including communication with the government, each other and in our schools. Providing text books in many languages would cost more. The point is One Nation... and to do that properly we need our newest citizens to assimilate.

Because these United States Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence is written in the "Official" Language.

Nothing is "official" anymore. We are a myriad of many races, cutures, ethnicities. Yes people who come here should learn the language, but few are going to be willing to give up their native language. In reality, we, as a nation should long ago, have mandated that every child learn at least two different languages besides English anyway. And we definitely should have mandated the teaching of Arabic.

Congress passes an ammendment to the immigration reform bill last year...called the inhofe ammendment. It makes Englisht the official language. It passed.

English should be the official language...because 1. it is expensive to print all forms in multiple languages. 2. English is the language spoken by the people that are born here. Therefore, if you come here, you should speak the language. 3. If I go to Germany, I don't expect eveyone to cater to me and my english - I don't expect to be able to read the menu at the Beergarten. Therefore, don't come here and expect to be able to read the cheetos bag.

Because it is the language the majority of Americans were raised to speak.

BTW with hundreds of differing tribes there was no one "native language" that you refer to.
