Hello An! I also have the Rebel K2, and as for your tripod what height are you looking for? Recently I purchased a Manfrotto Bogen 3001BN which gets up to 57" along with the 484RC2 ball head deal for $135 at www.bhphoto.com. it's over 3lbs altogether, but is a good one. What is your college budget anyway? Tripods are made with just the legs (as is my Bogen... which require a ballhead for 360 degree movement), then there's the kind with either a 2way or 3way panhead. Should you want a panhead, which is easier to work with if you're new to them, then get a 3way panhead which will have the flash on top not the bottom. Usually those with the panhandle on the RIGHT have the vertical pan in correct position... though there are some having it on the left with yet correct vertical pan positioning. Velbon makes some nice models. You should also get you a monopod for times when you can't or don't want a full tripod. In such cases a ballhead (like a Slik or Sunpak) will give you both horizontal and vertical shots. When I'm searching for tripods, I shop at either B&H or Adorama. You can check the height fully set up, when folded, and the weight. Good luck and keep at it.

yes - bogen / manfrotto - their $300 models fits any college budget. Might as well as suggest a $400 gitzo. For grins and giggles, let's throw in a $200 ball head with quick release...

Most college budgets are under $100. Sunpak makes some nice models along with Slik and Giottos.

Since I don't think you are doing anything professional, you need a tripod that will support the weight of your camera and don't need the fluid motion or 360 degree rotation. Check out the following linke for soem camera tripods that start about $49.99 and go up to the $600 models

I have a Bogen tripod. It's very sturdy and well worth the money.
