Do you think that people have a soul? If so, what do you think the soul is? Do animals have souls in your definition? Can machines have souls? Can the soul change states or be altered in any way? Is there a distinction between the mind and the soul? What properties does the soul possess? I'm just curious about what people think of souls. :)

Well, "soul" is a religious term and like all religious terms, it's open to interpretation. But we do have a consciousness and that may be similar to a soul in some ways. In the future, it may be possible to remove ones consciousness from their bodies and place it into a more advanced body or vessel.
By the way; consciousness is the sum of thought, memory and sensory perception.

The soul includes your emotions, your will, your thoughts. Animals also have a soul. Plants don't. Plants just have the physical body. What differentiates us from animals (besides our opposable thumbs) is that we also have a spirit. The spirit is made of the same "substance" that God is made of. The spirit lasts forever.
During our lives here, our soul resides in the body. When the body dies, the soul goes on with the spirit, wherever the spirit goes (heaven or hell).

The soul is the essence of a person. Something that is carried inside the vehicle of the body. I think it travels to other places when the body dies. I think that any living thing can have a soul even plants. :)
