Yes there were Indian tribes & reservations in Alabama and other SE states.
Google 'alabama indian reservations' will get you a number of returns
This map which shows current reservations shows none in AL http://www.cr.nps.gov/nagpra/DOCUMENTS/ResMapIndex.htm

That I'd not heard of that doesn't make it not so. It could be that that was an area where the native population percentage was greater at some time she was speaking of, which it was. You didn't give a time frame.
