I have bipolar and would like to get a dog for companionship. How do I get my landlord (through a property manangement company) to allow me to? I would be willing to pay an extra deposit and even more for rent each month. Any suggestions?

I know there is a federal law about it. By the way...I have bipolar 2...which is depressive, not so much manic...and I have had pets before, so am able to adequately care for them. I am new to Wyoming and don't know where to look for bylaws and such.

If you have a proper medical condition, go to your doctor and get them to write you a note that you need a companion animal. Your landlord legally has to let you have a companion animal if you have a doctor's note.
Good luck

You dont
You know you can't have one so you can't have one. You are not disabled at all so you can't have a service dog. Being depressed is NOT a disability so stop trying o scam the system.
"I know there is a federal law about it."
There is no Federal law that will let you have a dog since you are not disabled and can't own a service aniaml.
No doctor will give give you a magic note that will allow a dog and no doctor can give you a note that will allow it. An ESA is the only thing you can get and its a PET so the LL won't allow it

Since it sound like you can afford more rent and even a pet deposit have you looked into apartments that would allow you to have a pet? Why would it have to be a dog? Cats are easier to get landlords to agree to or even hamster or small pets like that or a bird. The right bird might make a WONDERFUL companion for you. You could teach it to talk and even teach a bird to do all types of great tricks! Should also be SUPER easy to get them to go for the bird!
wanted to add that being bi-polar have you really given this a lot of though and come up with a plan for the pet when you are unable to give the pet poper care due to the illness?? Is there some one that will be able to look after it for you?? Have you spoken with them about it and made a plan??

unfortunately its not your home and as a consequence you have to live by the owner's rules. I would probably advise you to leave that place and rent a place that allows pets. Or do talk to your landlord, show him/her a doctor certificate that actually states your problem. Also, say that your willing to pay more, also willing to pay for any future damage and only a tiny dog will do.

You should go to your doctor and get him to prescribe you a dog for a companion.. Yeah doctors do it. I had a guy call me, he had brain damage and a prescription from his doctor saying that a dog would help keep his anger under control.. Didn't sell him a dog cause of the anger thing, but he did have a prescription.
Check with the therapy groups, they are likely to have tips for you when dealing with landlords.

Check with your local landlord tenant act, and bylaws. I know that where I'm from, they can't deny you a pet unless a neighbour complains. Our bylaw also states that we are allowed 3 domesticated pets per household, so I'm sure you have similar guidelines that must be followed in your area that you can use to your benefit.
Good Luck.

I'm unsure if you can get a dog, and call it a therapy dog, when you're bi-polar.
You can look into apartments that allow dogs....it'd be your best bet, rather than trying to make yourself an exception to the rule, at the place you currently live in.

These types of dogs are NOT covered under the Disability Act so if your landlord says no pets, then no pets.

to be honest I doubt the doc will give you a note for this as it more your wish than actual based therapy............and have never heard of bi-polar being used in this way.
I suggest you look for a place that actual allows dogs and go from there.............why try to buck the system just cos it suits you.

depends on if you are training or using..they CANNOT refuse your dog if it is a service animal. if you can get a dog on that basis. no problem. be sure that is what you want. dogs are like people. they need attention, care, love...they are not objects to be had...make sure it is a commitment you are willing to take one first.
