My cousin is getting married in June, and she plans to wear her wedding ring to the outside of her engagement ring. My cousin argues that the engagement ring is placed on first, so it is supposed to be worn to the inside. When I got married, i didn't wear my engagement ring at the ceremony, because I thought the wedding band was supposed to be placed and worn at the base of the finger. Therefore I wear my wedding ring to the inside.

Does anyone know the proper way it's supposed to be worn?

You are supposed to wear your engagement ring on your other hand during the ceremony. The wedding ring goes on during the ceremony, and you put your engagement ring back on after. Your wedding ring should always be first, as it is closest to your heart, and your engagement ring is a "shield" to your wedding ring. You are right, your cousin is wrong.

Wedding and engagement ring: to wear together or separately?
Often confusion occurs when a bride doesn’t know where to place her engagement ring during the wedding ceremony. The best way to avoid awkwardness is to put it on the ring finger of the right hand before the ceremony. After you took the vows and exchanged wedding rings, you put the engagement ring back on the ring finger of the left hand with the wedding ring. This is at least what wedding etiquette indicates.

You are right!
The wedding ring is closest to your heart (worn at the base of the finger), engagement ring goes on top.

She can still wear her engagement ring on the wedding day, either on the right hand or the groom and slip it off, put the wedding band on and replace the engagement ring on top.

The wedding ring goes on first *closest to your heart* and then the engagement ring goes above it. However many people choose to wear it the other way around. I think it looks odd to have the engagement ring on first but that is just my opinion.

When you want to wear them together, you put the wedding ring on first, then the engagement ring on overtop, to protect it.
For the ceremony, either don't wear the engagement ring or put it on the other hand, so your hand is bare to accept the wedding ring. After, you can put the engagement ring on overtop, if you wish.

During the ceremony, the engagement ring's supposed to go on the right hand, ring finger.
After you're married, the wedding band goes first, then the engagement ring.

The way i always see it and the way io wear mine is Wedding band on first (inside) and then engagment ring. During the cerimony I wore my engagment ring on the right hand and on the way to the reception i then switched it over to the left hand on the outside of the wedding band. But i guess if her way makes her happy then so be it.

You are right. The wedding ring goes on first so that it is closest to your heart.

you are right. wedding ring should be close to your heart in your right hand's ring finger. but you will be wearing it during the ceremony while the engagement ring was on your left hand's ring finger. after the ceremony, you have to transfer your engagement ring to your right hand's ring finger on top of the wedding ring to shield your union.
