Ebay never has direct access to your credit card or bank account. PayPal is the preferred method of payment for most users. PayPal uses secure encryption for any sensitive information you send via the internet.
I do not have a source, but I have heard that using a credit card via the internet is more secure than using one at the grocery store.
As for what happens. . . Ebay has several different "stores" and, of course, its famous online auctions. Purchasing from the online auctions, you place a bid on an item, watch it to make sure your bid wins (and re-bidding if you are outbid), THEN you enter your payment info via PayPal. Technically, you do have the choice not to pay after your auction closes, but you will then have negative feedback on your account.

Hi, well, you have the same question I had when I started shopping at eBay. Thing is that the most reliable way to pay an eBay purchase is with Pay Pal, not only it helps to avoid to give your private info to the buyer but also it gives you some protection that might depend on what you're purchasing (right now I'm looking at a borla exhaust that's covered up to $2k) in case the seller doesn't send you what you bought after you pay.
Second, anything bad can always happen shopping anywhere! Not only shopping online, ask yourself if you have had to return at any given time an item you bought at any retailer. That's why eBay have something like a feedback system from the previous buyers of the seller you are looking at. Of course higher the feedback score the less chance you have at getting ripped but still a chance exist.
Always use common sense when looking for a bargain or for a new item, first learn to evaluate the seller, how much effort and info he poured into his listing, how is his score and always use Pay Pal when using eBay, that's what I call safe shopping.

Ebay is one of the safest places to buy from. What you need to do is open a Pay Pal account. They insure your transaction will be safe, and will give your $$ back to you if the Seller you buy from turns out to be dishonest. Or if the item you buy is not as described.

yes, and i've never had a problem. set up an ebay account with payments through paypal. (i think) paypal pays them, and you pay them. if thats not how it works, your purchases through paypal are insured, as they have representatives who will help you through any fraudulent debits of your account. also, don't buy from people whose ratings are lower than 99% positive, and read the user reviews of that seller to help you understand why that seller isn't at 100%, and what you can expect in them to be doing if something goes wrong.

It's perfectly safe, don't worry.
You can also use PayPal for the transactions and it's also safe.
They will forward your request to the seller and they will then send the item to you upon payment.
But please read feedbacks and ratings of the seller before you buy anything.
