We probably wont stop it. Im a mechanical engineer and im working on a project for fuel efficiency. And it isnt because we cant make more efficient cars, because we can. And isnt because we cant conserve energy, because we can. And it isnt because there are alternative energy sources, because there are, even though they are very expensive now and most people dont want to pay for them.
The problem is that carbon dioxide and the various nitrous oxides and hydrocarbons in the atmosphere are higher than they have been for at least 400,000 years. Global warming has already started happening. The ice caps have already started to melt. And even if we stop making more emissions which is pretty much impossible, warming will continue to happen.
Honestly, the Al Gore documentary is very accurate and you can go to any Blockbuster and rent it. It will give you all the answers you need, except for this. Towards the end of the documentary, Al Gore, who is very progressive and is trying to anything remotely reasonable to solve this problem recommends a number of steps which he believes could return us, if sucessfully implemented to our 1970 emissions level, a very ambitious goal. Most people hope to keep our emissions about the same.
By the way, if you do a google search for the Mauna Loa Observatory, that is the scientific place that Al Gore makes reference to which has taken very detailed measurements of this phenomena. If you check, the CO2 level is about 376 ppm and rising....
It will keep rising. And if we try to slow our emissions, it will still rise. It is rising about 2 ppm per year. And even if we succeed doing everything that Al Gore hopes, CO2 will still rise by alot even if we can reduce emissions to our 1970 levels, and by the way, good luck at that. Seriously. If everyone used an electric car tomorrow, that electricity still has to come from somewhere and right now it comes from coal burning, oil burning, and gas burning power plants.
Also, like I said, even we stop making CO2, the temperature will continue to rise and the ice caps will melt eventually. Geologically speaking, there have never been ice caps with the CO2 level this high. Eventually, those ice caps will have to melt. Eventually the oceans will rise a couple hundred feet. And eventually, the cities that exist now on the coast will eventually be underwater.
The only good news that I can tell you is that life will go on. Deserts will get worse but we can learn to irrigate. People can build houses more inland. The dinosaurs lived with the CO2 level this high and so can we. Some species will become extinct, and I doubt we can stop that. Mass extinctions have occured everytime that there a has been a climate changing event like this. The good news is that eventually, new species rise in their place.
Seriously though, the Al Gore documentary is a short film and easy to rent. I think it is very useful, informative, an easy to get. Plus, you dont have to read alot. Plus, it won an award.
Good luck. I hope this helps.

Wow but there's a lot of people who've either stuck their heads in the sand over global warming or who've simply given up!
If we ALL stopped worrying and got off our fat bums and DID something then maybe our grandchildren would have a hope of a fairly healthy planet! That's where my focus lies and is the motivation for suggesting the following, even though I don't have any children of my own. This is also an environmental choice - I have trouble with the idea that my impact is significant as it is, so I simply could not, in all honesty and using my (sometimes less than perfect) ethical stance to shape such a decision, put another "mouth" on the earth.
Here's my list, anyway....
1. Eat organic / locally grown foods...stops the production of more harmful chemicals, cuts down on transport costs and it's better for you as well! Also, make sure that the eggs you buy aren't from a battery farm!
2.Try going vegetarian as well...cows and cow farming is a big environmental / ethical nasty. I read a report recently that suggests that cows farting accounts for 3 times the amount of emmissions that cars do!!!
3. Buy ethical and fair trade goods. This helps increase the poorer nations citizen's basic wealth which in turn helps them to afford to achieve these kinds of changes as well!
4. Try to break your addiction to your motor car. These beasts are one of the worst things for the environment that we've ever had the misfortune to deal with!!! Try using public transport or ride places you'd normally drive to.
5. Use low energy light bulbs in your home. Consider buying high efficiency appliances (fridges etc.). Use gas to cook toast and heat water - toasters and kettles are huge consumers of power!
6. When it gets cold, put another jumper / sweater and thermal leggings on instead of switching on your heater.
7. Turn your television off at the wall at night, rather than leaving it on standby. This simple procedure can stop about 40kg. of CO2 getting into the atmosphere every year.
8. Consider buying "green" power from your energy supplier. It's not really "green" per se, but the premium you pay is used to subsidise people who are building sustainable homes and installing solar or wind generation equipment. The power so created is fed back into the main grid. If you can't, ask your power company "why not?"
9. Go see your local politicians and question them about what they're doing in parliament to affect change. Tell them that you're worried and that their answers will shape how you vote in the next election. It's a long shot, but if you live in a country with a parliamentary system, it can be a grand way to get change happening. Look at the Green Party and the amount of effect they've had across the globe since their inception in the mid-eighties. It might not appear much, but at least we do have a choice these days! "Never underestimate the power of the individual".
10. Finally, do an "Ecological Footprint" Test...it will show you how much you consume, based on your own lifestyle and residence...it's pretty scary, but very worthwhile.
Please see the people who post replies that "Global Warming is a myth" as ostriches with their heads in the sand. we ALL need to wake up to what is going on and accept the evidence.
Hope this helps!
Love and Light,
Jarrah

I will explain in as full detail as I can. Global warming is a butch of bull. The human race is not producing CO2 as much as nature does itself. Actually the human race produces about 6billion tons compared to nature's 180billion tons. Now does that change anything when the plants take care of it? Yes i know what you are thinking, the plants can't take in that much. And yes they can. CO2 is food for plants they get bigger and every living organisms wants to be bigger. Water and light is not a problem for them is they just keep wanting CO2. Another thing aobut CO2 is that it does not even affect the temputare. It is about 370 parts per million. Compared to the atmosphere it is about a grain of salt in a 44 gallon bottle. Now on to the ice caps. After an ice age what happens to the ice? It melts as it is happening right now. The last ice age was just 15000 years ago people. It takes ten thousands of years to melt a ice caps. Ever wonder why people only mention the north melting and not the south? Because the ice at that point was forcused on the north, the south was not as affected. Now on to the predictions of the scientists. That what they are predictions. Computer made predictions on what would happen in a hundred years. Now the computers dont even look at the Carbon cycle, the plants consuming it. If anyone tries to say, "The computer says so" as the person to put the program on revise, or tell the past. The computer will get the temputares 100% wrong. The thing is a computer does what its told to do and nothing more. Tell it to look at what will happen if CO2 builds up it will show you. But think of this, who says it will biuld up. The Carbon cycle people. The scale is not balanced the tempatures range but it is not tipped to the side of dramatic increase of tempature. And the human race does not tip the scale. If anything Global warming is just a waste of millions of millions of dollars. About 20 million million (20000000000000dollars spent on a government scandel)

Deforestation and industrial developments are the main causes for global warming. Forest fires and retrogression are the recurring features in the developing countries and less importance is given to augment the Forest areas even in developed countries. In 1997 Kyoto protocol, decisions were taken to reduce the global warming and it has proved ineffctive, emissions of green house gases are incerasing. Industrial development should be aimed at Eco friendly and proper effluent treatments have to be insisted in all the industries. Increasse of tree cover will defenitely bring down the global warming.

Global warming is in theory reversable, but it will mean global co operation between all countries ,and taking into account human nature and the world politics ,it is unlikely that this will happen,
At least not untill we are all in the middle of planetary disastres and it becomes a battle for the survival of humanity every where.
SOLUTIONS
if you want to help the planet ,plant a tree every week ,if everyone on the planet did we we would be able to reverse the destructive processes
reduce carbon emisions, and they are already working on that by alternative forms of energy and regulations on carbon producing materials, aerosol cans, burning rubbish, industrial chimneys, powerplants etc.
the capture of carbon and the production of water and assist the aquiferous manta.
the world bank pays large subsidies for reforrestation to capture carbon and the best tree for this is the Pawlonia
Waterharvesting projects ,such as millions of small dams.to redirect over ground waterflows from the rains into the ground to supply subteranian water supplies.
the protection of existing forrests.
stop building more highways, urban planning to include vegetation stop building cities encourage people to return to the land to conduct their business from there which now has become possible thanks to the internet.
education to motivate people to auto sufficiency by building more home food gardens.
education on environmental awareness
education on family planning to curb over´populaion
Agricultural education and improvements to follow the principals or sustainability and soil management.
more environmental or land ,design to prevent bush fires, such as--fire breaks
,more dams.regulations and control for public behaviour
alternative effeciant public transport to discourage the use of the internal conbustion engine
recicling wastes,limit water use

kari j, you are just full of it....why don't you get a basic science book and look up global warming. I am sure you will find the fundamentals comprehensible, which will probably motivate you to go on and read more advance effects of the subject.

The plain truth is, you can't. We can't. The government can't. Money can't. Worrying about it won't. Talking about it won't. "Conserving energy" won't. Researching it is a colossal waste of time, energy, money, lives, effort, laws, resources, etc.
Nobody or nothing can change, alter, 'fix", stop, delay, or avoid what nature does. Nature depends on man for nothing, and won't accept our "help". Everything man tries to change in nature gets screwed up and always has negative results.
