Usually the normal values are displayed in a column next to the results because labs use different techniques and reagents that make the values slightly different for each lab. Take a look at the printout and see if there is a range of numbers in a column next to your results. If so, these are the norms to compare with your results. Some blood tests only look for thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH - which controls the thyroid gland) and some tests include one or more thyroid hormones (T3 and T4).
Here's a link to typical ranges:

Could you post what the numbers and tests were, as that may help. Basically, if you had a TSH and it's over 2.0 your thyroid is slowing down. If the TSH is over 3.0, you will most likely go on medication for an underactve thyroid. If however the TSH was below 0.3 then you have an overactive thyroid.

The answers you already got are good. You may be told that you need to go on medication - once you start, you have to stay on it. It may take some adjustments to get the right dosage. If you want to help your thyroid through changing your diet, look for recipes for 'green' smoothies (fruit and green veggies combined). I'm hypothyroid and was able to cut my thyroid med dosage in half by having two 32 oz green/fruit smoothies a day. If I hadn't gotten lazy about the smoothies I'd probably be off medication by now. My doctor was amazed.

It's opposite of what you would think. If you are hypothyroid, then it would be high (above 4.5). This can be easily reversed with a daily suppliment. If you are hyperthyroid, then it would be low (below 0.5). Depending on the level, they can do iodine treatments to make your thyroid less over productive.

What sort of thyroid examination have you undergone? Is it through blood test or sonographic examination?
