I quit smoking, and started drinking nothing but water and have been doing that for the last week or so. I used to drink alot of soda and hardly any water.

But now, after these "positive changes" I'm fatter and especially bloaded....

Any tips?

It's not water retention, your total caloric intake has increased. You've substituted the sugar rush you'd get from soda with something else in your diet. Keep a detailed inventory of everything that's going in to your mouth, and then see whether it's really just the fluid.

People gain weight primarily from food, not fluid.

Well water does compose about 90% of your body mass (or a similar statistic) so drinking a lot of water will increase your body weight. Don't worry though! Just go do some exercising and you should feel better. Good for you for quitting smoking and drinking loads of soda, but you're halfway there. Gotta exercise too in order to lose weight.

Well, smokers who quit usually gain weight because they eat more without realizing it... i recommend finding some flavored tooth pics or sugar free gum / mints to occupy your mouth. And the weight gain could be that your body was accustomed to digesting so much sugar from the sodas and now that you have quit drinking them it is saving as much sugar as possible from the foods that you eat. You could maybe try just one or two diet sodas and the rest water, that may help.

Is it fatter or is it just heavier? One of the first things that happens when you start a weight loss/excercise program is that fat starts turning to muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat. So you could in a sence gain weight and be getting healthier.

You've likely gained water weight. Also, many smokers report weight gain. I recommend eating lean meat and fresh vegetables, and getting about 30 minutes of exercise per day.

Are you retaining water? Are you exercising? Walking helps get rid of some excess water. Good luck.
