There is a lot to consider because not all down is equal. You want to:
- avoid large feathers w/ ribs (the ribs break & poke you).
- make sure the material is tightly woven so it the little bits don't escape and you loose the loft besides having a mess.
- it doesn't smell.
- it's baffled or quilted so the feathers stay evenly distributed.

Personally, I agree w/ the 1st answer & recommend getting a synthetic alternative. (ex. Primaloft) It's easier to clean and cheaper. Here are some related articles:

You want high quality fill, there are ratings for down, the higher the number, the better quality is. You also can choose between down and feather...not sure the difference, and I think you can choose what bird it came from.

You want a high thread count for the fabric holding it together. This is the same rating as they do with sheets.

You want good sturdy stitching in the baffles or boxes...the comforter (a good one) will be divided up into chambers so the fluff doesn't move outside that chamber. Keeps it from going flat in places.

You can get comforters now that are machine washable...and that are colored. If you found both, you wouldn't need a duvet. If yours is white, and dry clean only, of course you need a duvet or you will trash it from day one just with regular use. A tidbit about duvet covers...they can cost as much or more than the comforter. SO. The easy care comforters are worth a look.

From looks alone, you just want to pay attn to good workmanship. Even seams, straight uniform stitches, etc just like shopping for clothing.

I bought a faux down comforter at Walmart for 49.00 and I have washed it 4 times and it's still like new.

Can't beat that!

real down is the best unless you have allergies but whatever you decide make sure it is what they call fully boxed otherwise all the feathers will just fall to the sides and then it's just like using a sheet.
