Where did the idea of guardian angels come from?
Is it in the bible anywhere?

Angel means messenger. Angels are created (Psalm 148:2,5; Col. 1:16), non-human, spirit beings (Heb. 1:14). They are immortal (Luke 20:36), innumerable (Heb. 12:22), invisible (Num. 22:22-31), sexless (Matt. 22:30), and do the will of God (Psalm 103:20). These angels have a ministry to believers. They guide (Gen. 24:7, 40), protect (Psalm 34:7), and comfort (Acts 27:2, 24).

There are good angels (Gen. 28:12; Psalm 91:11) and bad angels (2 Pet. 2:4; Jude 6). The only angels mentioned by name are Gabriel (Dan. 8:16; 9:21 ), Michael (Dan. 10:13,21; 112:1), and Lucifer (Luke 10:18). Michael is always mentioned in the context of battle (Dan. 10:13) and Gabriel as a messenger (Luke 1:26). Of course, Lucifer, who became Satan, is the one who opposes God.

Angels were originally created for the purpose of serving and carrying out the will of God. The fallen angels rebelled and became evil angels. Satan is such an angel (Isaiah 14:12-16; Ezekiel 28:12-15).

The belief appears in the Old Testament, although it is not specifically articulated or delineated. In the Book of Daniel angels seem to be assigned to certain countries.

In Matthew 18:10, Jesus says that children are protected by guardian angels:
"See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly father".

Here is something about guardian angels from the Douay-Rheims Bible:
Matthew 4:6 And said to him: If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down, for it is written: That he hath given his angels charge over thee, and in their hands shall they bear thee up, lest perhaps thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Luke Luke 4:10 For it is written, that He hath given his angels charge over thee, that they keep thee.
These verses prove that every person has a guardian angel.

First the Bible decided to promise a glimmer of hope out of misery.
Then it promised salvation from the fiery pits of Hell (and still does)
Now Guardian Angels are the Bible's way of promising private security for joining their little club

Guardian angels are basically your conscious. They are your positive and negative thoughts, your Yin and Yang. I believe it should have been mentined in the bible.

I agree with everyone above - it is found in the bible. Also, I believe that we all like to feel we have a special someone looking out for us, all the time.

the angel Gabriel, who watched over Jesus and the carpenter (his earthly father) and Mary (his earthly mother) when they were journeying into egypt to escape king Herod's command of the killing of ever first born son. (there were rumors that Jesus would become king of the Jews, which did happen, but he didnt show it, because he was a humble man)
