I like to go to the nearest pier and take the express boat. If you are on the tube (MRT subway), or taxi, you can go to Hua Lum Phong train station area - and the Sheraton on the river is not too far. Also, the last stop on the Sky Train is at the main boat terminal next to the Shangri-La. But there are boat stops all up and down the river. Language is usually not a problem on the boat - as long as you get the boat going the right direction - and it's super cheap. From near the Wat Pho pier, there's a ferry to get across to Wat Arun.

A taxi is the best way, and make sure you tell him to use the meter. He may state an inflated flat price to take you there so make sure he uses the meter.

best way is by meter taxi no skytrain or subway goes that way. don't take a taxi from the hotel they will charge twice the fare. after the grand palace you can walk over to wat po, and then take the boat across the river to wat arun (temple of the dawn) for 3 baht one way.
