You need a pump up garden sprayer, a bottle of fabric softener,a paper tiger (its a tool that makes very small perforations in the paper get it at a big box store) and a plastic scraper. Use the paper tiger and perforate the paper then spray with garden sprayer (hot water and 1/2cup fabric softener) to saturate the paper. Wait 15 minutes spray again. Then start peeling use the scraper as needed but let the water do the work, spray again if needed. Do sections spraying a few sections ahead. Works better than any commercial removal products and is MUCH cheaper. When you have all the paper off wash the walls with TSP and a kitchen scrubber to get all the paste off. Paint/primer will not adhere well if you don't get all the glue off.

I have done it every way this is the best. Don't rent a steamer big waste of time and effort.

Depending on the wallpaper.....some are meant to leave the backing on the wall(if it is the vinyl coated type). The reason for this is so that the next wallpaper to be applied would have a good surface to adhere to.
If you are planning to just paint it, then you could either paint the paper that is stuck to the wall (why,? because it is no different than drywall paper)-- 2 coats will give you an acceptable finish.
Or you could scrape that off but once you start, you got to do it all.
There is the steaming/wetting method. That involves alot of scraping.

And there is a wallpaper ripper you can get at the local paint/hardware store that works with an electric drill.

My hubby saw on DIY or HGTV the other day where someone used a super soaker water gun with hot water to remove wallpaper. I am sure you could add some type of product to the water that is normally used to dissolve glue or remove wallpaper. A steamer is a good option also. It usually takes some elbow grease. I don't reccomment painting over the wallpaper as many people suggest, because I have seen that done before and most of the time people regret it.

Fix a spray bottle of warm soapy water. Spray it on the paper and let it soak. In a minute or two it will be peal-able.
Wall paper paste is water based and once it gets wet it is easily peal able.Be sure to peal gently. If you damage the top layer of the drywall it is not fun to repair.

Be certain once the paper is off to thoroughly wash the walls as the paste will cause major problems with the paint or a new wall paper job.

I remove wallpaper professionally and you will need a sprayer, DIF (wallpaper and glue remover), a 4-6 inch flexible putty knife, a bucket, and a sturdy cleaning sponge. You can also get th Premixed DIF gel from wallmart but you need to have enough to make sure all of the glue is gone. First spray down the paper with DIF, let soak 5-10min. then scrape (warm water works best if you buy the diy mix). after all of the paper is off work wall by wall spraying and removing glue I would do this twice to be sure I got it all(it is very important to remove all glue or it will bleed through the paint when you paint it) then take your sponge and bucket of warm water and wash the walls (you can use a little bit of dawn dishsoap to help if you want. then let the walls dry for 24hrs then you should prime them with latex primer (which you canhave tinted to the color you are going to paint the walls so you only have to put on one finish coat) let it dry completely so you can look over it to see if any glue is bleeding through. If it is you can take a spray can of oil based primer and spray the spots you see (allow the oil based primer to dry for 24hrs to let it dry properly and to let the chemicals escape otherwise you will see that spot when you put finish coat over it) then apply finish coat. good luck anymore ?email me @yahoo

There is some stuff they sell at Lowes or Home Depot that is specifically for that. It's like a thick **** you slap on the wall and the wallpaper comes off rather easily. I used it to take out a cheesy border wallpaper the previous owners had done.

I imagine any hardware store that sells wallpaper would also have this.

If you can rent a steamer or buy one this works very good. Not a fast job but it will do the trick. First moisten the walls with warm water then use the steamer and slowly peal the wall paper away.

A steamer, you go to a hire shop and hire a steamer it builds up steam. It has a a face plate that you put near the wall and the steam gets under the wall paper and you scrap it off. Works well and easy to use, used them many times.

soak it with a spray bottle filled with liquid fabric softener and hot water. Soak it well and use a plastic not metal scraper to get the paper off. It also will leave a nice smell in the room . Good luck

I'd try the windex suggestion. There is also a tool / gadget called a Paper Tiger which works very well to help. Good luck, and have fun making it look new again!
