Your 1989 Prelude comes with what is called an 'interference engine'. That means when your timing belt breaks, the tops of your engine pistons will crash into the bottom of your valves, since lack of the timing belt throws the precision timing off. Yes, your engine is probably junk. Your options are to buy a completely rebuilt engine or search out an auto salvage yard which may have a decent used engine available. The decision should be based upon how much you value the car, and how many miles you drive.
