"The proper function of the government is to make it easy for people to do good and difficult for them to do evil."
~Jimmy Carter
I need to respond to this for an assignment in my political science class, but it seems too self explanitory to really say anythin about. Any ideas?

it means to give the people just enough to have them content but not enough to have them not rely on the government

Okay, allow me a moment of silliness. The function of the government---hmmm. For the people, BY the people & so on. I do NOT agree that it's to make it easier for people to do good yada yada. There "should" be certain standards by which a government is guided. This requires great participation of the people; it also does not mean the majority is always right. I have great respect for Jimmy Carter, but I find some flaws (or ommissions) in this statement. I don't feel it's self explanatory. Give it a good think.

It means that a government is successful when the people can gain good from it but not misuse it

while it would be wonderful for the govt to let go of the reigns and allow our morals to safely sail us through the world, thats not how it is or will ever be. therefore the govt must have enough power to give us no choice but to do good, and punishments for those who break code.
